Greening the Los Angeles River, With the Help of Friends

Sunday a group of volunteers will work to spruce up the banks of the Los Angeles River.

During the past four years, The Village Gardeners Inc., a non-profit organization formed by local Studio City and Sherman Oaks residents, has led a grassroots effort taking the matter of improving the walk into their own hands—one patch at a time.

They continue to make great strides toward restoring their dedicated one half-mile stretch of river front between Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Fulton Avenue with the help of hundreds of volunteers and partnerships with governmental agencies, schools and various community organizations.

“It’s really a mile of river front when you count both sides,” said Rick Rabins, a 28-year resident of Studio City and President of Village Gardeners, Inc.

Recent accomplishments include the removal of disease-infected oleander trees, new drought resistant plants and trees, fencing, trash receptacles and even the installation of dispensers for biodegradable doggie waste bags. But Rabins says this is just the beginning—he envisions a true park like setting with benches, trellises, hardscape and improved pedestrian access.

Events are held several times a year when volunteers participate in restoring the natural habitat by planting, mulching, trimming, weeding and litter clean up.

The next event will be held this Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the Richard Lillard Outdoor Classroom located at 13236 Valleyheart Dr. in Studio City on the south side of the river, one block east of Fulton Avenue.
