Steve Cardenas Helps Kids Handle Bullies

Read the tips this martial arts instructor has compiled.

Bullying has become a problem everywhere, and many schools are figuring out how to deal with it. just had a program schoolwide to deal with bullying.had a martial arts group come in to discuss how to get away and run from a bully.

When Steve Cardenas gave a recent seminar about bullying, the turn-out was all girls ages 3 to 9. One mother said she was happy to hear about this anti-bullying demo because her daughter (age 7) was just bullied at school that week. All the girls said they wanted to come back to take classes even the 3 year old who's parents both happen to be on the local police force and signed up that day to take jiu jitsu class at Force/Balance.

Here are a few tips developed by Cardenas, who is known as the "Mighty Morphin Red Power Ranger" in Burbank.

How to Deal With Bullies

Don’t give the bully a chance.

As much as possible, avoid a bully.  Don’t go into hiding or skip class, but if you can take a different rout to avoid him or her, do so.

Ignore the bully.

Bullies want a big reaction to their threats and teasing.  If you ignore them, its like giving them no reaction at all, which may discourage their behavior.

Get a buddy (and be a buddy).

Two is better than one when you’re trying to avoid being bullied.  Walk with a friend or two when you think you may encounter the bully.  Offer to do the same if a friend is having bully trouble.  GET INVOLVED if you see bullying in your school.  Tell an adult, stick up for the kid being bullied.

Stand tall and be brave!

Bravery is doing the right thing even when you’re scared.  Sometimes just acting brave is enough to stop abully.  Stand tall, hold your head high and you’ll send the message that you are not a victim.

Feel good about you.

Absolutely no one is perfect, but making an effort to look and feel your best will help your confidence.  Make the decision to get more exercise, watch less TV, eat healthier snacks.  Take pride in your personal appearance.  Getting involved in a martial arts program will help you build confidence and further learn how to deal with bullies.

Cardenas uses Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in his instruction and teaches children how to fight bullying by building self-esteem.

“I’ve seen many of my young students go from timid and shy with their heads hanging low to holding their heads up high and smiling,” said Cardenas. “I feel grateful knowing that I’m helping kids become stronger emotionally, mentally and physically. When I see my students face and body language change, then I know I’ve done my job.”
