Young and Alive Authors of 'Book of the Dead' [VIDEO]

Walter Reed's Tech Academy produces several creative projects for each unit of study, and this year's culminating project for Ancient Egypt was a "Book of the Dead" which comes to life.

Students make Power Points or Keynote presentations including a poster of themselves dressed as Egyptian gods, a video clip of a pharaoh busting out of his or her mummy costume and giving a quick synopsis of family tree and career highlights, a quick monologue about a myth or importance of the Egyptian god they represent, and shots of their creation of mummies made from stuffed animals.

Each page comes to life. The goal is for students of ancient times to feel like there is life to study, not just dead people, buried cities, and stale belief systems.

One student remarked on the project: "When you become a god, you see your city and your people in a new light."

Another student said: "You feel part of the stories, a character in the myths."

A girl, dressed as Hatshepsut, offered: "It's not just reading a summary of what happened some time thousands of years ago..."

One girl shouted, "I want my mummy!"

Her friend, dressed as Ra, god of the sun, offered: "It's more like coming to school to make videos, dress up to play, and then wanting to research more because of that."

Final word came from an enthusiastic student eating his snack during Nutrition: "I love making videos, working on computers, and feeling like I'm a part of the history."
