Thanks. SLO is Senior Lead Officer. NW is Neighborhood Watch. LE is law enforcement. The SLO's workRead More in community affairs and with NW groups to identify, to address, and to eliminate problems in specific areas called RD's. RD's are LAPD's Reporting Districts. For example, RD 1501 encompasses a certain geographic boundry in North Hollywood, and an SLO is specifically assigned to it. SLO's can be contacted directly at each LAPD Division to discuss neighborhood issues. Solicitation of magazine subscriptions or any service or product for "future delivery" is prohibited. Other forms of solicitation are legal with a valid LA Business Tax Permit and a government issued, photo ID-- ex. Driver's License-- which must be presented upon request-- and only between the hours of 8 AM and 8 PM. LAMC 41.43.1 and 42.19 address these ordinances specifically. (Los Angeles Municipal Code-- found on LA City Website) I'm going to write a blog on this whole issue-- including street sales, solicitation for money-- begging and panhandling-- trespassing, and the LAMC both restricting and allowing it in order to further clarify it. Find me under Toluca-North Hollywood Patch "Local Voices."

Just recently somebody came to my front door with a sales pitch. When I asked him if he was sellingRead More magazine subscriptions, and his reply was "I'm selling dreams and opportunities", I said no thanks and closed the door. Why? Because I now know it's illegal to sell magazine subscriptions door to door. I also wish I had one of those devices that you can put on the front tire of your car to keep it from being driven off. Is there any place I can buy one of those?

Marshall, thanks for theses comments. I agree with you, though regarding gates, it depends on theRead More people, the property, etc, might not be for everyone, but at other cases it's a great deterrence, and can give some more privacy to those who seek it. Many people install gates to protect their kids and pets from running to the street. Cultivating caring relationship with neighbors is always very recommended. "Regarding outdoor lighting" I personally not in favor for 24 hrs light on regime. 1st its wasting unnecessary energy, 2nd its stop to be a deterrence as you can easily see where are the dark spot, and hide there. While lights with motion detectors save more energy and energy costs, its comes on, only when some one is around, it scares those who needs to be scared, and it leaves the natural environment dark at night at all other times. Mailbox, and identity theft is a big issue as we all hear more and more about it. Mailboxes are very sensitive issue, as one can get, your bank accounts info, numbers, credit cards, and much more, sometimes with one visit to your mailbox, they can get a whole profile about you. I thank you for all the input. Regards,

Some of the comments we get are that in well secured buildings, the residents feel more secured,Read More sleep better, and have better peace of mind. That results in less complains to management companies etc. If resident don't feel safe at their homes, they complain much more, and are less friendly with their own neighbors. Lack of security makes people more anxious and much more suspicious of each other.

Better be safe than sorry! Crime and burglary prevention is pretty easy, and these day is veryRead More affordable as well. Deterrence is the name of the game, if you have a good visible security systems. They'll simply go to the next house which is more vulnerable. They always go for the easiest targets, wouldn't you? Put yourself in their shoes. The less risky path, unless they really go for you, cause they know exactly what you have in your house or business, than you need to put up all measures. If that is not the case, couple of good quality security camera around the house, a few signs, enforcing the doors and windows. ensuring your keys are not floating around, and that they are really cant be duplicate, ( not that its only says do not duplicate- that means nothing.) have a great beautiful gate that prevent anyone from simply drive in, increasing your privacy, and adds value to your property. Great Tips, A dog is an obvious deterrent as well, although no enough by itself.

I guess it all adds up to: "don't be a dope", right? Amazing what some people will do andRead More then be surprised that they get burglarized!
