Doesn't the Mountains Recreation Area have other means of raising funds? What happened to theRead More hundreds of thousands of dollars of traffic fines they collected? Is there a real fire prevention plan for the mountain area? I see signs warning of fire danger but not much else. How many rangers are actually employed by the Conservancy? I was told there are two for the entire Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area. What exactly are residents being asked to pay for?

Actually, the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority does not have "other means ofRead More raising funds" to continue service in these areas once Proposition A funding runs out. Unlike other public agencies, the MRCA does not receive ongoing revenue from state or local sources. Residents are being asked to help protect their neighborhoods in the district where $30 million has been invested preserving open space. MRCA employs 20 sworn rangers, three with full time residences on the Mulholland Corridor. MRCA also has 70 trained wildland firefighters. 30 were deployed a on the September Mulholland/Getty Fire because of their special expertise in wildland firefighting. The same people provide not only a fire prevention "plan" but a fully implemented program on a daily basis. Maintenance needs are high in the center of a major metropolitan area. Good maintenance drives out bad use and protects the neighborhoods. It is a good investment. As is further protection of open space and wildlife corridors in this very special area.
