Barkworks Pet Store on the Westside will stop selling puppies from puppy mills and will begin, inRead More March, to offer rescues from public shelters. If the concept works, they will do the same in all of their stores. Another way to save these abandoned pets.

In case you haven't heard, a fairly new non-profit group, Friends of Los Angeles Shelters, hasRead More become affiliated with Los Angeles Animal Services and opened a pet store called L.A. Love & Leashes. This store is also in the Westfield Pavilion, two floors down from Barkworks. The adoptable dogs and cats will be brought to the store from the West L.A. shelter every day except Tuesday. The store was opened for a while during the holidays and it was very successful with its adoptions. The Grand Opening is this Saturday. FYI, L.A. Love & Leashes will be run by volunteers. Come by on Saturday and see all the adorable pets.

The ASPCA website says that between 5 and 7 million companion animals enter shelters each year and approximately 3 to 4 million of them are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats). Finding homes for 3 to 4 million animals, although a laudable goal, feels out of reach. At least part of the solution needs to go back to the source. Spay and neuter should not be optional, breeding companion animals should cease, and people must be educated to "think adoption first." Now if I only knew how to make all of that happen...
