Last night's Meeting of Valley Village's neighborhood council

9/26/2013
Hello Neighbors,

Were you too busy to attend last night's Neighborhood Council of Valley Village Board Meeting at 6:30pm which took place at the local Presbyterian Church?

No worries, I'll give you a little summary.

Lovely refreshments were served and we had a handful of people fill out speaker cards to address the board and attendees.

We learned that there appears to be a hotel being run from a nice multi-unit complex on Westpark which is a cause of concern for some neighbors. There was some discussion of whether or not this type of use is legal.  The board will take action to see if this violates any rules and take the appropriate action.

We learned from a representative of 'Save Coldwater Canyon' that Harvard Westlake School has proposed constructing a large parking complex across Coldwater Canyon from the main campus which will include a rooftop football field for training, as well as a Bridge that would span over Coldwater Canyon Road to the campus.  The group 'Save Coldwater Canyon' is concerned and is looking for our neighborhood association's assistance in curbing such a large construction on this much traveled road through the scenic pass.  The board will seek advice from the neighborhood associations most affected by this expansion in Studio City and Sherman Oaks before making a statement.

A community liaison from LADWP gave us an extensive update on tunnel digging projects going on in and near our community.  Construction is currently underway on Magnolia between Coldwater and Whitsett which was originally expected to be completed by February 2014, but, after the discovery of another street beneath the street, it may be delayed.  Once that portion is complete, the replacement of pipe will continue from Magnolia, down Whitsett to Moorpark.

A representative from the 2-year old Facebook-like website "Nextdoor" spoke to us about the many features of this hyper-local focused portal that allows neighbors to get to know neighbors and makes it easy to "communicate with your neighbors about the issues that matter most in your community."  Free, secure and for neighbors only, it allows users to share recommendations, organize events, report suspicious activities, etc.  Check it out at www.nextdoor.com

We received an update on a proposed drive-thru Starbucks at of the corner of Laurel Canyon and Burbank Blvd.  The developers have encountered a zoning setback which should ensure that you'll be able to purchase your Christmas trees on this corner again this year.

The next Committee meeting of the Neighborhood Council of Valley Village will be held October 9 at 7:15p.m at Colfax Charter Elementary School.
