Valley Village's own 4th of July

When I moved to Valley Village eight years ago I encountered the sweetest thing.  Just one day after moving in, the annual Valley Village 4th of July Parade marched right past my front door.

Sitting on my front stoop with my trusty dog, I watched as families dressed in red, white and blue, riding bikes trailing American streamers, dragging festively festooned wagons, and guiding sartorially patriotic pets down my street toward our own little Valley Village Park, and I knew that I'd made a very smart real estate decision.  Clearly this was a nice community.   A real old fashioned community where neighbors know their neighbors and keep a watch out for each other, and lend a hand with a needed tool...even when you find yourself on the roof installing a weathervane and realize that your screwdriver has rolled down to the flowerbed.

Within three months of setting down roots here with my two sons, I had been introduced to every single neighbor on my block and learned of other hyper local events that take place here, such as our block's annual early evening New Years Eve party and baby showers for the new families that own and rent here, their futures secure thanks to high scoring public schools like Colfax Charter Elementary, Walter Reed Middle School, and let's not forget stellar private schools like Oakwood School.

This year, like every other, anyone who wishes to be in the parade congregates at the Addison Street parking lot of Colfax Charter Elementary School at 9:30a.m.  Volunteers from the Valley Village Homeowners Association get everyone organized and at about 10 a.m. the parade starts wending its way west, then north, then east, then south, then east again with many smiles and falderal, culminating at Valley Village Park where Jons Market and the Homeowners Association feed the crowd watermelon, corn dogs and cupcakes.
