Harvard Westlake

What are they doing now?  Horrible smell. Is it paint  oil base? Is it toxic?  If so, why wasn't  the neighborhood notified?

Hi Jeff, thanks for sharing this. You are the second nearby resident to share this information. My first contact told me the school was resurfacing its track and the fume is a chemical supposedly used to give the track its bouncy feel. I'm inquiring about it.

Yes, since I live closer to the track than just about anyone, I started to smell it the afternoon of New Year's Eve. The chemical they use to rubberize the track is called methyl isocyanate, which if you google it is what spilled in Bhopal, India killing thousands of people. Though they say it is safe, I had a headache for 4 days running and kept my dogs indoors and couldn't even use my heater because it brought the smell inside my house. I could smell it all the way down to Ralph's. So many people thought it was a gas leak they called the Gas Company and the guy they sent out to investigate said he got a headache. The Studio City Fire Dept also said they had several calls about the smell. If I'd known in advance I would have made arrangements to go elsewhere. I feel for the kids playing on the field today because I smelled it as I drove past this evening.

It mystifies me why Harvard Westlake did not notify the nearby neighbors of this impending air pollution. It's just another example of them being a bad neighbor. With a little notice, parents would have been able to make plans for their kids to play elsewhere and/or all residents could have arranged to leave for a few days. We're not talking about a couple of hours of smell - this stench lingered for DAYS and has made people sick. Why can't they think about anyone other than themselves? They operate in a residential neighborhood!
