Digging up the Art Treasures of Adat Ari El

Patch goes along for a walking tour of the synagogue's architecture and sacred art.

As Rabbi Emeritus wrote in Adat Ari El’s wonderful guide to the synagogue’s art treasures, “The beautiful paintings, sculptures and mosaics all reflect [the] concept of enhancing and beautifying the commandment to love God with our hearts, minds and creative impulses.”

The collection of art began with the founding of the synagogue more than 70 years ago, under the direction of Rabbi Aaron , the first senior rabbi.  He helped select architects and artists, and in some cases, provided the background information on the biblical subjects that were to serve as the subject matter for their works.

The congregation's current senior rabbi, Jonathan Jaffe Bernhard, wrote in the forward to Art Treasures of Adat Ari El, “The grounds of our synagogue have been blessed with many works of art that beautify and enhance our physical surroundings and in doing so, elevate our souls.”

Patch took part in a recent guided tour of the synagogue campus, led by trained docents. Some of our guides have been members of the congregation for more than 50 years.

The video will give you a taste of some of the most significant works on the premises.
