In the church, New Year's Day is called the Name of Jesus Day. In the
ancient world names were understood to signify and carry the power
and authority of the person, especially names of deities. When the
angel told Joseph to name the child Jesus, he said it was because he
would save his people from their sins. Jesus was the Savior, the One
with the power to bring God's mercy and redemptive love to bear on
human life. Jesus often told his followers to use his name in prayer
and ministry.

I thank you for the gift of your name, Jesus. Amen
