Happy Birthday Studio City Patch, You're 3!

Three years ago, on Sept. 13, school started, and that was the debut of Studio City Patch!

Each year on the anniversary, I’ve looked back and told you what I thought were the highlights of the past year, and what’s to come.

The first year: (http://studiocity.patch.com/groups/opinion/p/studio-city-patch-celebrates-being-a-year-old-today)

And the second year: Studio City Patch is 2 Today—and Here is Your 2-Do List ... (http://studiocity.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/studio-city-patch-is-2-today-and-here-is-your-2-do-list)

Studio City Patch is the first Patch to open in the City of Los Angeles. It was the first time that the city police force, the school system, the city council people and the city departments. They met us with skepticism at first, but soon all came to understand the importance of community journalism.

This past year has been tough. We’ve lost a lot of friends. I personally was very sad about Art Ginsburg (Mayor Garcetti, Others, React to Death of Art Ginsburg) and Gayle McKenna (Official Obituary of Gayle McKenna) and Annette Funicello (Local Celebs Help Dedicate Disney Studio for Annette…). Some of us knew Jonathan Winters, Harry Reems and Michael Ansara.

I personally lost my dog (R.I.P. Rudi) and mentor Roger Ebert (I Remember Roger), and I learned from local people like Renee DiSisto on how to make the best of things (Creating Dog Treats in Memory of Zeppy).

Because their businesses relocated, we’ll miss seeing the smiling faces of Janis Hood at the Henry’s Tacos and Stephanie Levy at Studio Sub (Henry’s moved down the block to where Studio Sub used to be). And we will miss Dorothy Barrett as she gets evicted from the National Academy of the Arts that has been on Ventura Boulevard for more than half a century.

We will miss Ron Taylor at the Studio City Neighborhood Council, and Ben Neumann, and some of the other activists who are moving on.

It’s been important over this past year to let people know about West Nile (West Nile Virus Found in Studio City), and the times that there are predators out and about (coyotes, that is): COYOTE ALERT! Coyote Attack near Studios! Add Your Sightings…

Then, there was some of the worst stories I’ve had to cover in the past three years. You know what they are:

*  Awful News—Maru Found Dead

Hit-and-Run Victim Identified as Studio City Musician

Police Seek Suspect who Left Dog for Dead in Alley

Studio City Attempted Carjacker Is Quickly Convicted and In and Out

Studio City Woman Nearly Carjacked Close to CBS Studios

Police Need Your Help in Finding Hit-and-Run Driver

There has been some good news around. The boy killed by police in a local parking lot won during his day in court (What Was it Like When Zac Had His Day in Court),  the Coldwater Canyon Closure went rather smoothly and Studio City Superstars Ryan Gosling and Mila Kunis Top the Sexiest Alive List…

Studio City had some of the most National Merit Scholars in the area, (See the Studio City Students Making the National Merit…) and Marsha Hunt wrote a new song (At 95, Marsha Hunt Debuts New Song About Gay Marriage).and a local producer has had success in a play and movie (Last Chance to Get Your Cameo in the 'Deep Throat Sex Scandal’…)

Patch also started a new system that was supposed to make it easier to find things and to blog. To date, many past stories and videos are not on the site anymore, but we are told they will someday return. Go to help@patch.com for blogging issues.

I still believe in Patch, and I believe it’s the best way to get the word out about what is going on in your community. At the moment, my days with Studio City Patch and AOL will end on Oct. 15 and I hope you will all stay in touch with me through my private email at MikeSzy@aol.com. I will have a community party in Studio City that I will announce at a later date.

And so, meanwhile, I hope that you will continue to take advantage of Patch and what it has to offer. Don’t let the numbers on the Facebook slide: https://www.facebook.com/StudioCityPatch   and if you haven’t yet, sign up for the Twitter page: https://twitter.com/StudioCityPatch

Check out your Newsletter settings: http://studiocity.patch.com/join and make sure you click on all the topics you want to read about regularly. I hope that some of the issues you’ve been having with the site will be fixed soon.

Studio City President John Walker is planning to make a presentation for me at the next Studio City Neighborhood Council Meeting at the CBS Studios Radford lot next Wednesday at 7 p.m., on Sept. 18. If you’ve not had a chance to go to one of these, please do, and come say “hi.” It’s a great community event to know what is going on here.

So, continue to have fun with Studio City Patch! I know I have!!
