Simple Home Tips to Do Right Now!

Go and do them, even as you're reading this column. They're easy.

Saving the planet can start at home.  Small changes here and there can help reduce energy consumption and minimize the impact we have on our environment.

Here are some simple ways you can help at home:

  1.  Turn off lights and unplug electronic devices when not in use:  It’s the simplest way to reduce energy consumption in your home.  You just need to be a little bit more conscientious about it, especially if you’re going out for the day or even just going on a night out on the town.
  2. Fix water leaks:  Leaky faucets, sprinklers, or pipes can contribute to wasting water.  Conserve water by fixing those leaks and eliminate that annoying dripping sound you hear at night.
  3. Choose ceiling fans over air conditioning units:  Instead of reaching for that thermostat, install ceiling fans instead and use those for the long, hot summer days.  It’ll save energy consumption and lower your electric bill.
  4. Switch to compound fluorescent bulbs:  Studies have shown that the fluorescent bulbs last longer and consume only a quarter of the energy compare to incandescent bulbs.  They’re also 10 times as effective.
  5. Reduce, re-use, recycle:  Sort your trash into paper, metal, glass, and organic waste.  Re-use your paper bags into lunch boxes or even book covers.  As much as possible, avoid using disposable utensils and silverware.

Five simple steps, now get up and do a few of them.
