At 4:40 Saturday afternoon a freak snowstorm hit Studio City, causing flurries, a bit of hail and icy thick raindrops.
Staff and customers at restaurant stood in the doorway snapping photos as snow fell outside on Cahuenga Boulevard. Some teenagers started a snowball fight scooping the white stuff off of cars in the parking lot in front of threstaurant.
Others gathered inside vegan ice cream store saying, “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Already the cactus gardens in the hills of Studio City were lined with patches of snow that fell earlier in the morning, and some roofs had white patches of ice and snow on top.
Across the San Fernando Valley, snow levels in the mountains were at the lowest in years.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Southern California for Friday through Saturday night, with more hail and flurries possible as temperatures dip to near freezing. The weather service said snow levels could get as low as 1,500 feet.
Areas of frost are expected after 10 p.m. with a low around 34, and winds up to 15 mph.
On Oscar Sunday, things will warm up, and no storms are expected. The high is expected to be a breezy 56 degrees.
