Studio City Residents Urged to Prepare for the Worst

A plan is being developed through the American Red Cross Map Your Neighborhood program to offer Studio City residents training on what to do during natural disasters and other emergencies.

Are you and your neighbors prepared for a natural disaster or another type of emergency?

A member of Hollywood's Community Police Advisory Board of the LAPD stopped by the Studio City Residents Association meeting this week to pitch an emergency preparedness program through American Red Cross and Map Your Neighborhood. It aims to assist neighborhoods in emergencies and disaster situations.

Board Member Ron Dresher asked the audience members to remember the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and other scenarios.

"What we’re offering at no charge is to get your block, your neighborhood watch, to get prepared," he said. Dresher said Studio City's Senior Lead Officer Michael Lewis and the Map Your Neighborhood's board will be putting together a plan.

In a 90-minute meeting, the American Red Cross & LAPD will teach:

  • The nine tteps to take immediately following a disaster.
  • Develop a neighborhood skills and equipment inventory.
  • Map Your Neighborhood and identify areas of concern such as gas meters, medically-trained, electricians, plumbers, generator, propane BBQ and radios.
  • Verify which neighbors need extra help in a disaster such as the elderly, those with adisability, or children who may be home alone.
