Weekend Planner: Classic Black Comedy and a Celebration of Blues

'The Prisoner of Second Avenue,' food-truck samplings, the annual Topanga Blues Festival and a fine arts show are among this weekend's offerings.

When/Where: Now through May 15. El Portal Theatre, 5269 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood. Performances at 2 and 8 p.m. Wednesdays; 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays. Why Go: Jason Alexander and Gina Hecht star in this revival of Neil Simon's classic black comedy about the problems of a middle-aged couple living on New York's Second Avenue.

When/Where: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Calabasas Civic Center & The Commons at Calabasas.

Why Go: More than 170 artists will be showcasing handmade jewelry, sculpture, pottery, photography, glasswork, wall art, woodwork and metal art. The festival, in its 14th year, also features live musical entertainment and free youth art activities.

Pricing: Free admission.

St. Frances de Sales School Fair

When/Where: Friday, 6 p.m.-11 p.m.;  Saturday, noon to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 7:30 p.m. St. Francis de Sales School, 13368 Valleyheart Dr., Sherman Oaks (at Dixie Canyon Avenue and Moorpark Street).

Why Go: It's one of the biggest elementary-school events in the area and open to the public. This annual fair features fireworks, traditional carnival games, rides and live entertainment by performers, including Bob Cowsill and Friends, Kelly's Lot, Relax to Paris, the Rockin' Haims and Pac Maniac.

Pricing: Free admission; rides and food cost extra.

Food Truck Festival at Sherman Oaks school

When/Where: Friday, 3:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies, 18605 Erwin St., Tarzana.

Why Go: Sample the wares of mobile eateries at this LAUSD magnet school's senior fundraiser, a Mini Food Truck Festival, which is open to the public. Participating trucks are: Komodo (5 p.m.-9 p.m.), Papa's Tapas (3:30 p.m.-10 p.m.) and Lake Street Creamery (4 p.m.-7 p.m.). The Senior Class Talent Show begins at 7 p.m.

Pricing: Food trucks vary; talent show tickets are $7 presale, $10 at the door.

28th Annual Topanga Blues Festival

When/Where: Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd., Topanga Canyon.

Why Go: It's the annual fundraising festival for the Southern California Blues Society (SCBS), under the trees at this very special amphitheater. It promises to be a great day of blues featuring Chuck Willis, Lynwood Slims Blues Band, Gregg Wright and Sean Lane.
