'Die Hard' Barely Beats 'Identify Thief' at Box Office

The latest installment of the "Die Hard" film series squeaked out a narrow victory over the quirky comedy "Identity Thief" to land atop the North American holiday weekend box office, according to final figures released today.

"A Good Day to Die Hard," starring Bruce Willis, earned $28.6 million between Friday and Monday, besting the $27.5 million collected by Melissa McCarthy's "Identity Thief," according to Hollywood.com Box Office.

The romance "Safe Haven" debuted in third place with $24.5 million, while the 3-D animated film "Escape from Planet Earth" opened fourth with $21.1 million over the long weekend. The zombie romance "Warm Bodies" collected another $10.6 million to claim the fifth spot.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the holiday weekend were "Beautiful Creatures" ($8.9 million); "Silver Linings Playbook" ($7.4 million); "Side Effects" ($7.3 million); "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" ($4.2 million); and "Zero Dark Thirty" ($3 million).
