Burglars are usually quite cowardly people. They want the easy pickings. They want to get what you've got and get out.
So, what they are looking for are homes that are not secure, and where it appears that no one is home.
Typically, they'll knock or ring first, and hope that there is not a response. If there is a response, you'll here something like, "Is Paul there?"; as if they were really there for a good purpose. You'll explain that no one named Paul lives there, he'll reply, "Oh! Wrong address!" and he's off to another target.
But there are all sorts of ploys to make it less likely that the thief will even venture that far! Amongst these are "This Home is Under Patrol" window stickers and lawn signs.
And, another example of this are a size 14 pair of work boots!
