Is Musical Theater Camp for Everyone?

Musical theatre camp may have more to offer your child than you ever thought. The effect that theatre has on someone can only be seen if they give it a try.

Okay, it's summer and lots of parents are actively looking for camps that will give their child something fun to do and physical activity.  I know, I am a parent.  Of course there is also the fact that many of us work and we need a place for the kids to be AND we want them to be participating in something that is a positive learning experience.

I know there are many sports camps out there and lots of you who have sons will opt for this type of camp, but I would like dispell some myths about the theatre for those who have never participated in any type of theatrical proposition.

Myth # 1:  Theatre is not for boys!

FACT: There are many boys involved in theater. In our program we have had many boys who do both sports and theatre. As these boys have grown up in our program they have become great role models for our newer and younger members to look up to and go to for advice and support.

No one should have to choose between sports and the arts. Kids should not be defined by whatever activity they are participating in. The theatre is a place for anyone and it is an accepting place.  Many of our participants come to us and find a place where they feel important and feel like they belong.

Myth: You already have to know how to sing/act/dance

FACT: Singing, acting, and dancing are skills that anyone can learn just like anything else. Of course some children may have a natural ability for these things, but anyone's talent can be honed through formal classes. At Rising Star we pride ourselves in creating a space for everyone, regarless of any previous experience. With every production we teach cast members dances, songs, and acting skills throughout the process.

Myth: Theater is just for fun, you don't learn anything important

FACT: One important part of this is the FUN.  Here is why.  Our brains are working overtime WHEN we are having fun.  So in addition to singing, acting, and dancing, musical theater teaches important life skills and because they are having fun they totally absorb these things. They learn creativity, imagination, how to become a team player, cooperation, respect, acceptance and responsibility, confidence and learn critical public speaking skills. It improves their memory skills, music and language skills. And this all happens in an atmosphere of FUN.

I had a young boy who joined us and his mother said he had been in some other productions and would not talk at all.  After 4 years in our program he is now a part of an opera program.  This might not happen to every child, but why not give your child a chance.

Theater may not be your child’s life passion; the lessons they learn from theater will last them a lifetime.

Have your kids try out theater this summer.  You never know who they will become.
