Nine marijuana dispensaries in Studio City and nearby in the Cahuenga Pass are among the 135 listed in Los Angeles that will be permitted to remain open by the city following the voter approved Proposition D.
Proposition D, passed by voters in May, calls for a drastic reduction in the amount of medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles and allows only 135 dispensaries to remain open.
Those 135 selected dispensaries have been permitted to remain open because they registered with the city prior to ordinances passed by the City Council in 2007. Those businesses also had to be registered with the city in 2011 and under Measure M, which began taxing the sale of marijuana.
Proposition D could potentially close down up to 1,000 marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles, and the Studio City Neighborhood Council Land Use committee has had community meetings about whether the number of shops concentrated in the area is simply too much. (At one point there was more than 20 along Ventura Boulevard.)
