Come On Get Happy

Where do you find happiness?

This Tuesday will mark week seventeen in my Happiness Tuesday series over at bridgetstraub.com.  That is a lot of happy! Some weeks are more difficult than others. There are times when the last thing I am feeling is happy, and yet I know from the responses I receive that people look forward to these posts, so I keep an eye out for something that will bring a smile to someone’s face.

It’s a blessing, in truth, because generally the one to smile first is me. Pulling these posts together forces me to take a look around, and to realize that even in my darkest moments, there is beauty surrounding me. It’s easy to lose sight of that when things are not going according to plan. When your world appears to be crashing down all around you, it feels safer to close your eyes tight, bury your head, and wait for the storm to pass.

I was watching Saturday Night Live this week, and they did a skit about a girl who sent her friends away after a disappointing day at work, saying she’d join them later. As soon as they were gone she put on Adele’s “Someone Like You” so that she could have a much needed cry. The joke was that one by one, each friend came back, and wanted to join her cry because they all had something to be sad about, too.

These are challenging times for all of us. It’s easy to get pulled down under the weight of tightened finances, bickering politicians and a seemingly endless stream of scandalous news stories. That’s why now, more than ever, it’s important to take a moment to breathe deeply, look around and to know that there is still a lot of good in the world. If you need a few reminders, just head over to my blog and click on a Happiness Tuesday or two. Think of it as a service opposite of the one offered up in that SNL skit.
