Hoping For A Miracle

Have you ever wanted something so bad it hurts?

Have you ever wanted something so bad that it hurts? Not in a horrible way, but like a dull ache that won’t go away. That’s how it is with the musical I wrote with Laura Hall. “Room to Grow” began as little more than a challenge to come up with a play for kids that we’d be able to sit through. With two theatrically prone children, we had seen them in all of the classics; Honk, Seussical, Annie, Grease, etc. The goal was to write something contemporary, with great songs that they’d enjoy singing and we could listen to over and over. What can I say? We outdid ourselves.

We began writing and something magical happened. It’s been just over a year since we were able to showcase performances with a large group of kids in the Colfax summer theatre program, and people are still singing the songs back to us and asking what we are doing with the show. For a while, we got busy with other projects and did very little. We put together a packet to send out to potential theatre programs, but what intrigued us most was the idea of putting on our own production.

With that in mind, we turned to Kickstarter.com, and for the past six weeks we have been trying to get the word out to anyone who might be inclined to back us with a pledge. We’ve found some, too, but we have only two days left and, short of a miracle, we are not going to reach our goal. The way Kickstarter works is that if you don’t reach your goal, you get nothing. Now granted, a miracle could happen. Spielberg could be reading this right now, snapping his fingers and declaring, “This is it, exactly what I have been looking for!” What? He could.

Okay, so it’s not likely, and this is why I am feeling this ache. I want “Room to Grow” to soar. I want to see it succeed, and I am clueless as to what direction we should move in next. I know it’s not over until it’s over, and this won’t be over until I see “Room to Grow” performed from coast to coast, but right now I want this to work so bad it hurts.

So I ask again, have you ever wanted something so bad it hurt?
