Rain, Rain, Go Away...

A plea to the weather Gods.

Dear Los Angeles Weather,

I love the rain, I really do. I sat mesmerized for, well, only minutes, watching yesterday as water came pouring out of the sky, bouncing gracefully against the garden bench out on my side deck. It was beautiful. There, for those few minutes, each drop landed and then leapt up once more before settling into the forming puddle, like a ballerina leaping across a stage. It was a sight to behold.

Unfortunately as I beheld it, I watched my income drizzle away, because this writing gig does not pay the bills. What pays the bills is my sister’s photography business for which I work. My sister likes to shoot outdoors in natural light and she does so beautifully. Can she work around cloudy days? Sure she can; in fact, she embraces them. Clouds cut down on the glare and make it easier when dealing with light sensitive blue eyes. Clients, however, tend to panic when they hear that it will be anything less than sunny. Before you even put on this water dance, one client canceled this weekend’s session. Shortly after your performance, a second client canceled. This leaves only two of the four sessions we had scheduled earlier in the week. Do you see the problem?

In their defense, clients want to be comfortable while being photographed and many of them have small children who are naturally drawn to puddles, like moths drawn to a flame. Personally, I love a good puddle picture, but not everyone wants to go the artistic reflection route. I get it. So I am imploring you, Los Angeles Weather, keep your downpours to midweek and allow us our weekends at least through this holiday card season. This is our chance to make up for the quieter times of year, and you are literally raining on our parade. My kids want to eat and, let’s be honest, they are kids, so even more than that they want those holiday gifts they are so fond of. Okay, I want them, too. I’ll admit it, we’re all a little greedy that way.
