Kogi and Sushi Business Coming to Former Makiyaki II Space

Studio City Neighborhood Council's Land Use Committee does not oppose two conditional use permit applications for alcohol service upgrades.

The ever-popular Kogi barbecue Korean style cuisine is making its way to a space in Studio City, with the hopes of opening next spring.

A representative for Tokyo Kogi appeared before the Studio City Neighborhood Council's Land Use Committee Wednesday night to discuss its application for a beer and wine permit at 11388 Ventura Blvd., the former space of Makiyaki II.

The committee voted 9 to 1 to approve the conditional use permit, which will be heard by the full board next week, with a list of conditions.

Brett Engstrom, representative for Tokyo Kogi, said the owner is bringing a lot of clientele from Sushi Dan, and the menu will dually offer an extensive sushi and Kogi menu. The 1,900-square-foot space will expand into the adjacent business space next to the former Makiyaki as well, with proposed seating for 57.

Depending on its processing with the city, Engstrom said Tokyo Kogi plans to open in the spring of 2014. They requested to stay open till 2 a.m. Thursday through Sunday but may scale back to 1 a.m., given the neighborhood council's conditions.

Also Wednesday night, Engstrom presented the committee with an application from Tuning Fork, located 12051 Ventura Place, to upgrade to a full alcohol service menu from beer and wine. The committee took no issue with the proposal and forwarded it along to the full board.
