Grauman's Chinese Theatre Gets New Name After $5M Deal

Chinese electronics company TCL pays more than $5 million for the naming rights to Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

Hollywood landmark Grauman's Chinese Theatre will get a new name and some upgrades after a more than $5 million naming rights deal with Chinese electronics company TCL, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Hollywood Boulevard theater, first opened in 1927, will now be called the TCL Chinese Theatre, according to the Times.

Improvements to the theater are planned as part of the 10-year licensing deal, the Times reported, including stadium seating and a new extra-wide screen.

Planned improvements include a new extra-wide screen, stadium seating, superior sound and projection systems, and a new box-office marquee on Hollywood Boulevard.

The deal will be announced Friday, the Times reported. Street closures are planned near the Chinese Theatre as part of the announcement.

Yes, David. How can anyone ever recognize it as other than the house that Sid built. You know, it was Sid who accidently walked across wet cement. The construction foreman was furious and said, "Now that will be there forever!" Sid recognized that forever would make his theater a standing landmark and so Graumans became a lasting tradition. Manns recognized that, how long will it take TCL to realize the landmark will always be what it has been, no matter what a price will buy.

Why can't they just own the theatre and make money out of it and leave the name as is? Graumans Chinese Theatre is a historical name, dammit!! I agree with all of you who posted before me! Don't know why these companies don't realize that it's bad PR all around when they change the name of a building or institution that is revered by many and is a historical part of the area they are coming into. Bad gris gris (or however they spell it down in New Orleans)!

Mikiwood, I love that! Bring our landmarks back, leave them alone and give our children and tourists something to remember of Hollywood and Los Angeles other than - she'll sell out for anything. Please comment on the benches removed - would be nice to have back what so expensively was bulldozed out - safety issue? What say you.
