Why is it that going vegan helps the environment?
There is some easy answers to that.
Half of the water used in the United States is consumed by animals for agriculture. One pound of meet uses an average of 2,500 gallons of water, according to a Newsweek story. To put that into perspective, the water that goes into a 1,000 pound steer could float a destroyer. While, producing a pound of wheat takes only 25 gallons of water.
Another startling detail: it takes 20 pounds of soybeans to feed a cow that makes one pound of meat. That same amount of soybeans could feed all the people who are starving in the world
And, local resident Ed Begley Jr. (see his column), who is vegetarian, said, "You know, I just feel better."
