New School Year! New Library! New Me!

Read on to learn the latest news and discover all of the non-book resources like CDs, audiobooks, DVDs, databases, and programs that the library features!

Wow! It's September already! There has been A LOT going on in library land since I last posted in May.

First of all, as of July 18, thanks to the passage of Measure L, all libraries in the Los Angeles Public Library system are open SIX days a week!

Here are the Studio City Branch Library's new hours:

Sun. Closed
Mon. 10:00-5:30
Tue. 12:30-8:00
Wed. 10:00-5:30
Thu. 12:30-8:00
Fri. 1:30-5:30
Sat. 10:00-5:30

The new hours for the Richard J. Riordan Central Library downtown and regional libraries are available here: http://www.lapl.org/branches/

Also, I am no longer the Teen Services Librarian at the Encino-Tarzana Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library.  I was transferred the Studio City Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library in late June, where I am now the Interim Library Manager.  I haven't posted in a while as I've been busy learning the ropes at my new library, but I am looking forward to sharing all of the wonderful resources at my new branch, including news and tips from my new colleagues! That is also why I am now posting on Studio City's Patch.com rather than Encino's Patch.com.

What hasn’t changed, however, is my dedication to reading, literacy, librarianship, and community and my wish to share all that is great about those topics with you here!

Here is a brief list of fantastic events that are coming soon at the Studio City Branch Library:

Oct 04 - Distinguished Speaker Series: Dee Wallace
7:00 PM
The Friends of the Studio City Branch Library are proud to present actress and author DEE WALLACE as part of our Distinguished Speakers series. Ms. Wallace is best known for her role as Mary, the mother in the film "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestial" and will be discussing her book BRIGHT LIGHT. This event will be held in the library's Community Room (Capacity: 70). Free and open to the public.

In addition, we also Infant and Toddler Storytime every Monday with our fabulous children’s librarian, Ms. Barbara!  Ms. Barbara’s storytimes are so popular, we had to split them into two sessions - one at 11 a.m. and another at 11:30 a.m.!

We also have lots of great Grown-Ups And Books (GAB) volunteers who read to children in the afternoon throughout the week.  For older children, Ms. Barbara has a monthly children’s book club and discussion group, and we are hoping to start a Gaming Club.

For teens, we have Teen Council meetings, where local teens and tweens can help make decisions about library events for teens and books, CDs, and DVDs to add to the teen collection.  Teens may also participate in our Teen Volunteer Program to earn community services hours, as well as join our Teen Knitting Club, where teens knit accessories to give to local charities.

A full list of our upcoming events may be found here: http://www.lapl.org/branches/Branch.php?bID=25

If that’s not enough, we’ll also be having a Studio City Branch Library Back-to-School Open House/Library Card Drive the week of October 17-22, 2011, where we can share all of our resources with you in person!

To get reminders of our upcoming events & news, “like” the Studio City Library on Facebook and/or follow us on Twitter!

As you can see, there is just as much (or more) going on at the library as ever, and I’m delighted to let you know about it, and hope that you join us soon.

The Studio City Branch Library is nothing without the Studio City community!
