What's That Smell in Studio City? It's Gas, But It's OK

Smell something funny around the heart of Studio City on Thursday?

Well, the gas company is letting some natural gas go in the area of Laurel Canyon and Ventura Boulevard, in the busiest intersection in the area.

"The release of the natural gas is perfectly safe," said Geoffrey Yazetta, the Studio City field representative for Los Angeles City Council member Paul Krekorian's office, who attended the Studio City Neighborhood Council board meeting on Wednesday night. "It will be harmless."

So, there's no cause for alarm if there's the smell of gas near the busy intersection. There's inspection work going on by the Southern California Gas Company near the intersection starting Thursday morning and expected to end on Friday, June 21, according to Omar Miranda, the associated engineer of gas transmission and system operations at SoCalGas.

Apparently, according to the council member's office, letting off a little gas occurs rather regularly around Los Angeles.

In a letter distributed to the Silver Triangle residents and businesses in the area, Miranda said, "The project consists of inspection of a natural gas transmission pipeline as mandated by the California Public Utilities Commission and lowering the pressure of its pipeline by a safe release of natural gas into the atmosphere."

The work is expected to go on from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Miranda warned, "We may work extended hours if necessary due to unforeseen circumstances."

The project will not interrupt gas service to customers in the area.
