Bridging Religious Divides....

I was born in Sri Lanka and grew up in a multi cultural, multi ethnic and a multi religious society. My father had a phenomenal influence in my life. From a very early age, my father impressed upon us that humanity was one race. He often said to us, "all rivers flow to the same sea." We were taught to Respect and Recognize all people and all faiths.... I went to a Catholic School. had neighbors who were Buddhist, friends who were Hindu,  and a father who was Muslim......
Religion and politics have always been very volatile subjects. Today as I see the world I think what divides us more than anything else is religion. The question is not whether there is religious intolerance, but what can we do about it. The corrosive effects of religious conflict can be overwhelming to many and challenging to some.
If we are truly focused on creating a world that will have more love and peace and less fear and violence, we must begin the journey in our homes. We must truly teach our children to understand Americas rich religious diversity. In order to do that we need to acquire an appreciative understanding of all faiths. Our society needs a new kind of leadership, we need leaders who are well grounded in their own faith traditions but equipped to address emerging challenges and brainstorm fresh solutions.
Three simple things we can do today -
1. Understand how ones own theology or beliefs permits positive engagement with people of different faiths.
2. Identify at least three values that are common to all faith traditions.
3.Be Curious not judgmental.
