Thrift Shops Plan December Clothes, Books Donation Event

The stores need hundreds of volunteers for the event.

In-need members of the community will get a little help Dec. 8 when the Los Angeles chapter of National Council of Jewish Women host its annual community resource fair.

The organization will provide thousands of pieces of clothing and children's books for the needy at the event, which will take place in the parking lot of the NCJW/LA Council House, 543 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles.

Social service agencies will be distributing information about their programs and services at the Community Resource Fair, also located in the Council House parking lot.

NCJW/LA's eight council thrift shops provided more than 5,000 people with 85,000 pieces of clothing at last year's clothing giveaway. More than 200 volunteers donated their time to make this event possible. More volunteers will be needed this year, the NCJW reported.

"When we see thousands of people--of different ages, different backgrounds, speaking different languages--lined up around the block to come get their bag of clothing, we know we are meeting an important need in the community," said Amy Straus, NCJW/LA Board Member.

In addition to providing the clothing for the Annual Clothing Giveaway, Council Thrift Shops fund NCJW/LA's community programs that assist women children, and families. The programs include a free Counseling Talkline (877-655-3807), Women Helping Women Community Counseling & Support Services, and Women Helping Children Art & Literacy Programs for Youth.
