Heat Wave Continues, No Relief in Sight

Hot weather forecast through at least next Tuesday.

HEAT WAVE 2012 - DAY 10. Temperature gauges around the Southland once again hit the upper 90's and 100's on Tuesday as August continues to bring the heat.  A very stubborn high pressure system remains parked over Arizona, shuttling heat and moisture into the area.  The Studio City Weather Center hit 98.5 for the day, believe-it-or-not marking the coolest day since August 5th when we hit a high of 92.

The heat prompted the California Independent Systems Operator, responsible for managing the state's power grid, to issue yet another Flex Alert, calling on residents to conserve electricity in order to avoid the prospect of brown-outs.  The alert expired Tuesday evening.

Cooling centers were also open again, offering shelter from the hot temperatures.

The monsoonal flow of warm, moist air also caused several powerful thunderstorms to develop over the inland mountains and deserts early this week, causing roadway flooding in the Antelope Valley and a sparking a few brush fires south of Los Angeles, which firefighters continue to battle.

So when can we expect an end to this stretch of hot weather?  Forecasters say not anytime soon.  One glance at the outlook for this week and it gets old quickly.  Sunny and hot, highs in the mid to upper 90's through at least next Tuesday.  At least we're a bit cooler compared to the 105 readings we saw this past weekend.

While temperatures will remain unchanged, a small bit of relief may come in the form of a drier air mass early next week.  Extended forecast models show the high drifting northward into Nevada, allowing a low pressure system several hundred miles off the coast to have a bit of influence.  Instead of the moist air from the southeast, a drier southeast flow may take the edge off this heat wave.  Of course, forecasters are always cautious when it comes to these long-range forecast models, so we'll have to see how this develops.

In the meantime, keep the fridge stocked and the A/C crankin'.  Summer rolls on.
