October Weather's Split Personality

Hot weather, mild weather, Santa Ana winds, thunderstorms... October has it all! Now that we're done with the storms, it's time to turn up the heat!

October in Southern California means two things when it comes to weather: Wildly swinging temperatures and Santa Ana winds. This year, it seems to have meant unruly storm systems, too.

Thursday saw thunderstorms over much of Southern California. Most of the activity missed Studio City, although we did rack up a few hundredths of an inch of rain. Other areas of LA County saw lightning, flash flooding, and even some sleet up in the mountains.

A mudslide in East Los Angeles covered the Eastern Ave offramp from the I-10 Freeway, shutting it down as crews assessed the stability of the rest of the hillside.

Several waterspouts were confirmed as thunderstorms formed offshore, placing the Coast Guard on alert.

Now the the low has passed to the east, a strong ridge of high pressure is building into the region, and temperatures are on their way up!

Highs Saturday will see a 10-degree increase over the mark from Friday, and Sunday will add another 10 degrees on top of that. By Tuesday it'll be downright hot, with highs expected to reach 95.

Winds will be mostly light around the southern San Fernando Valley, but we could see some gusty winds in the usual spots, such as the I-5 corridor.

The only significant changes in the long term will be the temperatures. Once the highs peak on Wednesday and Thursday, the sea breeze will return and temperatures will come back down.

So last week we saw October's wintry side, this week we'll see the summer-like side of the month. Given time, I'm sure we'll see the winds and the fire weather that October is famous for as well.
