WANTED: Huge Reward for Information Leading to the Return of Joel Wachs! (part two)

Part Two of our discussion with Joel Wachs and what he loves about New York.

If Joel Wachs had ever suceeded in becoming Mayor of Los Angeles he says he would have patterned himself after Mayor Bloomberg of New York (unquestionably his favorite Mayor of any large city in the world).

It's fascinating to me that he admires Bloomberg - a man who posseses the very same qualities that he does.  Both are highly visible, walk and work among their constituents, both with a plan or vision of growth and improvement and both with the 'cajones' to lead.

We agreed that most politicians in elected office or considering a run these days seem to lack the testicular fortitude to lead.  We discussed other great Mayors of our day -- John Lindsay was a near-perfect template.  He was a strikingly elegant man who loved his job and was never afraid to try innovation.  I confessed to Joel that I had worked on the 'John Lindsay for Mayor of New York' campaign and the most wonderful memory I have was not the victory celebration at Gracie Mansion but the first Sunday when vehicular traffic was halted in Central Park.  John and Mary Lindsay headed a caravan of Manhattan bicycle riders of which I was one.

Joel mentioned that Rudy Guiliani was another courageous example of a visionary Mayor -- he cleaned up New York and made it possible for New Yorkers to walk the sidewalks of the city without fear. The tragic effects of 9/11 seem to have brought New Yorkers closer together.  Joel mentioned that he has never before witnessed an appreciation for culture and the arts as he has in the past ten years of living in Manhattan.  He says, "There are lots of very talented people living in LA but they don't express their enthusiasm and support for the arts the way New Yorkers do".

What does he enjoy most about his new lifestyle?  He loves being able to walk everywhere.  He has no car and uses public transportation to navigate the city if his destination is too far to walk.  He admits to eating out every day and prefers Italian restaurants and steakhouses.  For special celebrations his favorite upscale choice is the Michelin three-star Le Bernardin (the awesome French with topnotch seafood dishes).

Is it any wonder that our beloved Joel Wachs leads a charmed life?  He is the proverbial Big Fish in a Big Pond.  He has a vision, a plan for his life and his work.  He has the testicular fortitude to see it through.  We still miss him after ten long years and would do anything to get him back!  Yes, Studio City (hearts) Joel Wachs.

Those of us who are more familiar with the genes which statistics have shown are most likely to formRead More breast and ovarian cancer understand the choices--certainly better for me than before I was diagnosed and knew so little. I am fortunate that there is no history of cancer of women in my family.

@MikeSzymanski I must admit that I haven't been able to detect a new format. Where is the format?Read More Who designed this? All I can tell is that there is a beautiful shot of trees -- perfect! Under that banner all hell breaks lose and you can't tell what you're looking it. There might be a huge blowup of Mr. Walker or a too big notice of something official-looking -- possibly an agenda. I have not been able to navigate through all the stuff. Lots of white space on either side which gives me impression that we're tailoring a community paper more toward an iphone or smart phone (or a tablet). Maybe I need a GPS to find a good list of contents here. In the meantime, it's not very attractive (exception for the banner trees photo) nor entertaining and not very informative. Scotty Reston, where are you now that we need you?

the picture selected is nice and it well suits the page. it would be nice to see the full pic. tooRead More bad so much of it is blocked from the top portion of the content....any chance of seeing the full picture and starting the content beneath it?

I find this very disconcerting. Mel Randall who is on the Land Use Committee was asked to submit hisRead More name. We assumed qualifications would be checked and then those best suited would be chosen. Two entries of the same name is in itself so bad makes me feel that all of this should be redone.

I was at the meeting last night and saw all I need to see on how our neighborhood council work. TheyRead More had a drawing for the grievance panel. WHAT A SHAM!! They drew 1 guys name twice and rather than stop the proceedings and make sure that the names in the hat were legitimate and no other duplicates exist and redo the drawing, they just drew another name. Now it probably was just a fluke but the appearance of a rigged drawing is there and it taints the whole council and it proceedings. It is very apparent why we need a grievance panel in the first place. When the appearance of corruption exists at the lowest levels of our democratic process it is no wonder that the whole system is collapsing before our eyes. Our neighborhood council should hang their heads in shame!
