Cheers - A Remembrance

They say that booze can kill you.  Too much will make you fold

What’s so bad about a beer as long as it’s icy cold?

In my youth I drank Vermouth and got a little tipsy.

At college we drank only beer.  It’s all we could afford

With Rheingold, Schlitz and Pabst Blue Ribbon we never did get bored.

I switched to Johnnie Walker Red to jump start my career.

Sophisticated working girls did not display their fear.

Beekman Towers, top of the world, a hangout that was handy.

Was the place you went to drink Alexander’s Brandy.

Visits to France gave one a chance to learn about the vines.

It’s part of one’s education – the corks, the labels and signs.

Is Montrachet ever passe?  Will any Port do in a storm?

Green Beaujolais!  Hooray!  Hooray!  Sniffing it first is good form.

Meursalt, Pommard, Moselle, Vouvray, how ‘bout a full Cabernet?

A taste for every palate from Reisling to dry Chardonnay.

Meanwhile at home the party raged..  Martinis, Rob Roys and Stngers,

Singapore Slings, Manhattans galore and foods that you ate with your fingers.

A Brooks Brothers suit worn with a rep tie, a Ceil Chapman dress for the lady.

With Bobby Short music and good cigarettes – nothing the least bit shady.

We danced until dawn ‘neath the silvery moon and knew we were truly blessed.

What happened to ruin our golden days?  Is something we’d never have guessed.

Drumbeats of change had a cadence so strong, our country became divided.

Turn on, tune in, drop out, they sang – the battle cry never subsided.

The chanting for peace, love and freedom belied the subtext of hate.

We marched and gathered in protest until it became too late.

We lost our leader, we lost a war, we lost our innocence too.

Will we ever heal and be whole again?  I hope so.  I really do.
