I Was a Dropout at Starbuck's Screenwriting Workshop.
What a fabulous idea! 'James Bond' meets 'When Harry Met Sally'. It can't miss. I had this brilliant inspiration -- it came to me in a dream. Let's face it James Bond can do anything -- he's strong, virile and has almost magical powers. Harry, on the other hand, is more like a member of our family. We know him -- he's sweet, kind, considerate and sort of nerdy. He's like one of your neighbors Would it be possible to merge the two men? I have nothing against films like Transformers and CGI stuff, but I adore character-driven movies so much more. This morning I set out to join the literati on Ventura Boulevard at Starbuck's. I found a parking space near Barnes and Noble and proceeded to Starbuck's to set up shop among the other Hollywood scripters. I gasped when I opened the door -- every table was taken! Every single chair had something on it. How could this be? What time do these people get here? I ordered a large iced latte and eventually took it back to my car. It's the first time I ever used the cupholder. My God, it was shocking. I was a Starbuck's Dropout. Yes, I know, there have been lots of super successful people who were real dropouts -- Patrick Henry, Charlie Chaplin, Ansel Adams, Richard Branson but they didn't drop out of Starbuck's Screenwriting Workshop, did they? Maybe tomorrow I'll just stay home and write. Or, I might try another coffeehouse -- maybe Peet's or Coffee Bean won't be so crowded. What would Patrick Henry say? How can I write a boffo screenplay without being at Starbuck's among the super successful literati? What would Mario Puzo have done? I guess I'll try again tomorrow...
