Overused Words and Phrases.

William Safire said, "Is sloppiness in speech caused by ignorance or apathy?  I don’t know and I don't care."  The list of overused words and phrases continues to grow.  It seems politicians and media giants are relying on the same tired phrases to score points.  Are they doing this, using repetition for propaganda value, or are they simply getting stale and tired?  Please read the list and for the sake of the audience, think about replacing the old ones with more poetic and unique choices.

 

1.  It is what it is.

3.  At the end of the day.  (What happened to the beginning?  Noon?)

4.  We need to have an adult conversation.  (That’s right, Goo Goo Heads!)

5.  He needs to put on his Big Boy Pants.  (Isn’t he diaper-trained yet?)

6.  Spot on.  (Out, out, damned spot!)

7.  Methinks  (Unless you’re Shakespeare.)

8.  My bad.  (Stop repeating your bad behavior.)

9.    Irregardless (That’s not a word.)

10. Anyways  (Why are you making it plural?)

11. Bucket List  (How unappealing.)

12. Artisan (One who produces limited quantities, like wine or cheese – not cheeseburgers!)

13. Kicking the can down the road (Isn’t there a more descriptive way of describing what Congress does?)

14. I can’t get my arms around it.  (Then maybe it’s too big.)

15. Back in the day  (Get current, Buddy!)

16. He has your back  (Which renders you spineless.)

17. That being said  (Again and again.)

18. Whatever...  (I’m too bored with this dialogue.)

19. Just saying  (We know, we know.  You’ve already made your point.)

20. No problem  (Is it possible that you forgot how to say, "You’re welcome?")

21. Where is he at?  (Never end a sentence with...never mind.)

22. He’s been drinking the Kool Aid  (Did he make enough for the studio audience too?)

23. Nuclear option  (Do Jefferson and Madison know about this yet?)

24. Double down  (That quilt must be super soft!)

25. Baby Bump  (How clever these girls have become, adding an appendage to their anatomy!)

26. Under the bus  (We hope it’s warm there.  Then again, you have lots of company, don’t you?)

27. Launching a platform  (Never mind, he’s on the dais.)

28. Going forward, Leaning forward, Moving forward  (Doesn’t this thing drive in reverse?)

29. If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep your healthcare plan.  Period.

30. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.  Period.  (Except when you can’t)
