National Night Out in Studio City Augut 6, 2013

A Community Event for All: National Night Out

This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Night Out (NNO), otherwise known as "America's Night Out Against Crime". It was created in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of various crime prevention programs including neighborhood watch groups, law enforcement agencies, state and regional crime prevention associations, businesses, civic groups, and individuals, devoted to safer communities.

The NATW wanted to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. With that idea, the National Night Out was launched.

NATW’s National Night Out program culminates annually, on the first Tuesday of August (in Texas, the first Tuesday of October). National Night Out now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.

In the past, the Studio City Neighborhood Council (SCNC) was proud to be involved with the NoHo National Night Out. But this year, the regional mission was to encourage a more "local" presence per each community, that's when the SCNC stepped up to the plate to create a NNO in Studio City proper.

The Studio City Neighborhood Council is very excited to be part of this annual event. And the organization hopes to strengthen the community by encouraging the Studio City neighborhoods to engage in stronger relationships with each other and with their local law enforcement partners.

The large-scale, one-night event is being spearheaded by the Studio City Neighborhood Council's Public Safety Committee with immense involvement from civic leaders, other SCNC committee and board members, and local organizations and volunteers.
