Inside the Carillon Over Hollywood

A 16-year-old is playing the tunes from the church.

Anyone visiting Hollywood can see the iconic 14-story tower of the Hollywood United Methodist Church with the giant AIDS red ribbon on it.

Sometimes, you can also hear the music of the historic carillon that is more than half-a-century old.

This year, at both the children’s service at 5:30 p.m. and the later midnight service, the music played before and after the services that went out over the neighborhood was played by 16-year-old church member Dante Luna. He has learned to play the instrument over the past two years, but it is a device that you cannot practice on, nor can you hear even when playing it.

Here is a behind-the-scenes look into the workings of the amazing bells and how they work.

(Dante Luna is the nephew of Studio City Patch editor Mike Szymanski.)
