He's Black!

This is just my observation as to why the President doesn't enjoy more support from his well supporters. He's Black!

What do we know for sure about President Barack Obama?  He’s BLACK!!!  And it’s really messing with all of us. It’s been messing with us for the last three years and in 2010 it really cost us.  Every liberal was and is just as upset as every devout racist. It’s just a matter of what degree as to how much we are upset. For liberals and Democrats it’s unsettling and we can’t shake it.  Don’t try to act like it isn’t. It is.  We wish we could be okay with this but we’re not.  Otherwise we would be screaming with unbelievable pride about this man’s accomplishments and the steel of his courage, his grace and his wit, his cool, his ethics, his manner, his eloquence and most of all that he is our President!!!

I’m going to be 60 years of age soon and this is only time I’ve felt good about the President.  We, who believe this is a great man in the most important office in the world, need to get over ourselves and admit our bias and our mild racism and get rid of it. Apologize to him and his beautiful family for not going out and let everyone know we are willing to die for him as so many of military have already shown.

What I believe with all my heart now is that everyone was and still is surprised that he became President.  This wasn’t supposed to happen for a long while. Rush Limbaugh still isn’t use to blacks being quarterbacks in the NFL.  Cam Newton steams him just as much as Donovan McNabb did but he’s a racist.  That’s how he is supposed to act.  We, Obama's supporters and surrogates, should be crazy in love with this guy but our timidity is palpable.  The ONLY reason we’re not is because he’s black and we have not accepted it yet.

WE, WHO SUPPOSEDLY BELIEVE HE’S DOING A GOOD JOB, SHOULD BE MAKING SURE WE LET EVERYONE KNOW IT UNTIL HE IS RE-ELECTED AND WE HAVE GIVEN HIM AN LBJ CONGRESS SO HE CAN CHANGE THE FREAKING COUNTRY. Give him another four years really moving the country forward and MAYBE BY THEN, WE’LL BE USE TO IT!!!!

We had become so accustomed to having white Presidents even when they embarrass us like President George W. Bush and President Clinton electing another one that it had become habit. In these two cases, the former couldn’t talk and the latter couldn’t stop talking including looking all of us in the face and LYING to us. Having a black President is freaky good and it’s time to admit it. Our timidity in not supporting this amazing man unequivocally is shameful.

WELL LET ME DO THAT NOW. I SUPPORT YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA! I WANT YOU TO BE RE-ELCTED!!!!!  I HOPE YOU AND YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY WILL FORGIVE ME FOR NOT SHOWING MY SUPPORT AS I SHOULD HAVE.

I know he and his family will forgive me because, unlike many that oppose him and his family, the Obamas are gracious and loving people who want the best for me and even those who so viciously disagree with him.

He’s the best President I have ever seen or had the honor to support in my lifetime. The first time I ever gave to a Presidential Campaign was his and I will do it again. His enemies are irrational and dangerous and will do ANYTHING to stop him.  His detractors yell and interrupt conversations when people speak well of him in public and YOU SURROGATES should NOT LET THEM WIN THOSE CONVERSATIONS. Let them scream and yell but make sure you have equal time to state your view.  Equal time is not a rule now so you have to carve out your space to make your point. Not by yelling but by being patient and letting these irrational people talk themselves out to let everyone show their true nature.  Their fear of what he represents has made them just plain stupid or angry or both.  Call out the moderator if they have not moderated fairly even if the moderator is supposedly leaning forward. Make people listen to this salient yet simple point. It’s GOOD to have the best person be the President even if he is BLACK. President Barack Obama has given us his best and the least we could do is, for the next three and a half months, give him ours.

Even so, it is wonderfully weird to see him as our President. Isn’t it?  I’m progressive, liberal, believe in an active working government that is there for you from conception to past your death until your life is finally settled and yet it startles me still to see the reality of my desires manifested in him.  We have a black President way before we expected to have had one. That might explain the 2 million plus people who showed up to his Inauguration.  His accomplishments will fill whole sections of libraries in your Kindle. Some say he’s like Jackie Robinson but he’s so much more. He’s transformational and I don’t want this chance to be blown without following through with what he portended by us electing him our President. As he said it on the cold night in Iowa, “Change has come to America.”  Thank you Iowa!!!

I believe what happened is the great dream of Dr. Martin Luther King came true much earlier than we thought it would.  We were so amazed at how bad a President could be with President George W. Bush that we elected a person based on the content of his character and not the color of his skin.  When he won we all were surprised liberal as well as the most devout Rush... uh... racist. We need to do that again. Make him President again. If we look at the content of the character of the two men, the President and Governor Romney, it’s no contest. President Obama is about the best content you can find in anyone in America.  In four years, we’ll do the same for a woman!

I am somewhere left of liberal (depending on the definition) and did not vote for Obama because he was black. Many liberals are so committed to equality that the kind of effects you discuss do exist, but at the age of 45, I and my contemporaries are not affected in that way at all.
As for the "Job He Is Doing" - His accomplishments are unbelievable, and for me personally, I was genuinely impressed, proud and touched with he formal endorsement for marriage equality (not that I am or ever will get married). Technically speaking, however, his job includes "negotiating" both within his party and the Republicans to get the best legislation and success. His technique of being completely inclusive with the concept of Bipartisan Leadership (however admiral) has led to endless negotiations ending with the Republicans getting everything (and more) than they ever wanted. That is a problem with his 'job performance' because studies have been done ad nausea and any negotiation must start with demands you are willing to compromise on. Starting with the desired midpoint concession becomes the opening offer in the game of negotiating the Republicans have been given them all the power and control. But "He IS Black" and unless one is in the 1%, the only rational reason to vote Republican no matter what is pure Racism. People are allowed to be racist, but they ought to own it and not keep making stupid excuses and insulting our President or what he has accomplished.

Thank joninla for your comment. I believe you when you say you voted for Barack Obama but not because he's black. And I appreciate your observation that some from your generation might have done so. As part of the liberal boomers, to say we voted for him because he was the best candidate is I hope true. I say that because for so long we watched the terrible injustices dealt to people of color that I believe that part of his getting elected was to help right those wrongs.
GoodGriefCharlieBrown July 10, 2012 at 10:11 pm
This is the most riduculous tirade I have read,. You do not speak for every liberal & you do not speak for everyone who voted for Barack Obama. Me fears thou protesteth too much. Perhaps you were self reflecting as you wrote this mess, very liberally sprinkled with the word "we", as if you write for every Democrat who voted in 2008, most of whom have no idea who you are or what you're talking about. I voted for Barack Obama for many reasons, because I''m a Democrat, because after George W Bush, the very word Republican made me sick, because I was impressed with Barack Obama's convincing campaign of "change", his class, his eloquence, his common sense positions on things that were meaningful to me, and my severe distaste for all things John McCain. There are many other reasons I am still glad I voted for Barack Obama, and my vote was not shaded by race and it is not "messing" with me. I still feel the same about the President except his campaign of "change" is less convincing, but I know what a walking plastic blow up doll Romney is and what a disaster he would be as president. I see the Obamas as an ideally beautiful family and Michelle Obama as the coolest First Lady ever. And please don't judge my degree of support for President Obama in any time frame , because you have no way of knowing what it is. If you want to color the 2008 Presidential election in shades of black, speak for yourself, that is all you are entitled to.

Thank you for your comment GoodGriefCharlieBrown. I am honored that you feel that mine that was the most ridiculous tirade you have read. I could only hope it would be the most ridiculous ever. Ah but mine is but to dream. Thanks.

I posted on this same subject on my own blog Voolavex.com - when it started to seem obvious to me. Marie - please have a look if you get the chance I will vote for Mr Obama again because he is my own choice for POTUS.

I believe the blog posting on your blog Voolavex.com you're referring to was from September 2011. If it is, I love it and want to thank you for alerting me to your blog. You have a new reader. Sending your brilliantly written letter to the President asking him to quit is I believe also an ingenious political strategy. I do believe that Joe and Jill could win and perhaps if the GOP retained control of the house maybe he would be able to work with them. But who knows?
I was thinking today that maybe this is a boomer's issue and that's who I was trying to reach and maybe the time when President should run again, as you proposed in the letter, is the same time that this visceral prejudice dies out. Literally. And the way a lot of us are eating that may not be too long!!! Thank you for your blog and thank you for your comments.

Thank you for this post. Obama's race certainly makes him an easy target for the radical right to attack him personally. That is why the right wing has made the attacks against him so personal, and for the most part, they have stuck for a large portion of the electorate. These ill-informed conservative tea bag express types believe he is from another country and wants to take away "American" re: "white" rights and greatness away. Sadly what these tea bag express individuals do not realize is that the "American" re: "white" dream has been under assualt by the wealthiest of Americans for decades now. There is a real ideaology that says those with the most resources should keep them and those with the least should stay that way. This isn't the America many people are tought in grade school, an America that prides itself on hard work and social/economic mobility.
Obama, while not a savior to humanity, has been a spectacular President when compared to his fellow statesmen. Sadly, the Republicans do not care about moving America forward, they care about winning elections (and tax cuts for the wealthy), that is it. It's a stunning revelation that has existed for quite sometime. If Governor Romney backed by secret money and no actual agenda were to win the Presidency we would be in for a wild ride of sky-high debt, no job growth, no investment in America but we'd have a fantasticly low capital gains tax. Is THAT what America is really about?
90069 July 11, 2012 at 06:05 pm
I love Joe, have met him and seen him speak many times. Obama is a much more polished and disciplined politician than Biden could ever be. Don't take my word. Ask voters who have rejected Biden in presidential primaries a few times.
He is a great man, but he is not the best at Presidential politics. With Obama, we actually have a winner that us Democrats have long sought out. He will win and then it will be about making sure we win AGAIN in 2016 to cement our victories (re: FDR) as these progressions will always be under attack from those with extreme resources who do not have empathy for other Americans outside of their narrow social circle. I think Obama will win in 2012 by 3 or 4 points, which is close, and that will be due to the widespead voter supression tactics and unlimited secret money republicans were able to rush into the system. But we need to work very HARD in combating the lies Romney and his allies have lined up. We've been here in 2000 and 2004. We know exactly what we'll be in for with a President Romney (who actually won't be in the driver seat).

Thanks so much for your comments 90069. I do appreciate your thoughts. I'm putting together a follow up to He's Black. Should post at the end of the week.
Deb July 12, 2012 at 02:19 am
I was blown away by your article. To me, to clearly state the obvious is courage. I think it is important to recognize that not only is our President black, he's white too. He was born to a Caucasian mother. In my opinion, every mother sees her child as who they are and to me, I am sure he was viewed as being just who he is half white/half black. One would have to say, perhaps, the Divine one planned it that way. In order to understand both side of the black/white world you must embrace, experience and truly be it and I think this is why he's excellent at understanding the American people because his heritage is just that. Surely, the African Americans recognize that he is of mixed race and embrace him because he looks like them. It is unfortunate that society is being divided or may I say, that the true color of man is being revealed with the exception of the younger generation, they see no color . Everyone knows the truth, everyone appreciate the banks no longer gouging bank accounts with extra fees. Oops, the housing market failed, why? because big brother finally said, why are so many people loosing their homes? Greed. Our President inherited the problem and he has done well to not let the American people suffer by spending money, bailing out the auto industry. Basically, he has my vote because I am wise to know that the economy will strive after this election. Why, it will be an open field for the next election-he would be term out..
Marie Fairman July 12, 2012 at 08:39 pm
Thank you Deb for your comment. He's indeed white as well as black but the doesn't seem to matter to some. To me he is the essence of what America is. It has never been a white nation or destination. It was always a mix of cultures from the very beginning four plus centuries ago.
Dannielle Huxley July 14, 2012 at 02:08 pm
Wow, this is one of the most insulting things I've read in a while. Where do you get off calling someone racist simply because they don't agree with the president's policies? Or even if they simply don't like his personality? Do you not remember the personal, vile attacks against Bush Jr.? I'm not saying many weren't well deserved — I think many were— but that's sort of my point. Though, unfortunately, there are those who will judge by race (or gender or age or whatever else), many (I'd like to think most) people react to policy and personality. To say those who dislike Obama as president do so because he's black is as silly and wrong as to say those who disliked Bush are racist because they didn't like him because he's white. All your rant indicates to me is either A) you are so incapable of fathoming others' political views that you can only reach the "racist" conclusion or B) you simply like causing controversy (as you said you are honored GoodGrief thought your post was the most ridiculous tirade...).
joninla July 14, 2012 at 03:55 pm
The incideous nature of Racism is the inability for people to recognoze and acknowledge their negative feeling towards an entire group of people (not just black racism, but also gays, women, foreigners et al).
Do I think it is possible that people may actually like the political position & policies of the Republican Candidate over those of President Obama? I think the question answers and explains the whole issue. No I do not think people are voting for Romneys political policies ... Because he has not even made any statements about his intended policies he would use to lead our country.
Marie Fairman July 15, 2012 at 02:17 am
Danielle this is different no matter how you look at it. He's black. We'd never had a President who is or even entertained the thought that we could have one. And our previous President was the single worst President in our history. Thoroughly incompetent and made an absolute mess of a real serious problem. Instead of following his favorite philosopher Jesus he followed cowards and the over reacted. Did some go to far in their criticism? Of course they did. Everyone has the right to be stupid. That's why there is a 1st Amendment. But many of those people were giving voice the to the tens of thousands being hammered by the "Bush" doctrine. But did I just now? Unfortunately not. I stated the facts and did not besmirch his humanity as critics do with our current President.. President Obama has been by contrast a magnificent President who hasn't give himself enough credit and his so called surrogates didn't either. Why? Because the insidiousness of racism. You feel the necessity to qualify your statement of support for him. The GOP did not with W. So yes there is racism because for a while there has to be. It's hard to shake. My next blog will address this. I believe we need to desperately swing back to a more liberal position that President Bush's favorite philosoper advocated and balance the mess caused by a heartless conservatism over the last say 30 odd years. You disagree and I truly respect that. Women need to speak out more. Thanks you for comment. I mean that sincerely.

I voted for Obama because he offered hope and spoke of changing the culture in DC. After four years of the worst administration I can imagine, and watching our long held values being ignored because of the government and business interests exploited fear, I really felt Obama and the Dems would actually try to end the wars, increase taxes on those who benefitted the most from it, put a brake on NAFTA and begin to focus on our own domestic needs. Instead, we got expanded wars, bank bailouts (sure, Bush promoted them, also), bailout to union heavy employers, and expanded one sided trade deals, with no credible attention paid to the average American. We got a health care plan that is the biggest giveaway to private industry and Big Pharma instead of single payer. In short, I just get the feeling that Obama's election was planned by powerful people who are now putting Romney on the stage so they can pull his strings, as well. Obama and the Dems have proven their incompetence as much as Bush, the neocons, and the whacko right. I will be surprised if 50% of Americans turn out to vote this time. What's the use?
Marie Fairman July 15, 2012 at 09:18 pm
Jack I thank you for your comment. It probably felt good to let the world know that its someone else's fault and nothing has changed and so on and so on. For me and the LGBT community he has been the first President to acknowledge our humanity with ending DADT and then actually saying that he approved gay marriage. To you that may not that big a deal but to know our President believes that I'm as important as well...you. As for what he has not done. Well let's see there is that Libya thing he didn't do anything about, Osama Bin Laden is dead and looks like its not good to be next in succession of that organization. President Obama has spent less than any President in the last forty years by a factor of 10 and of course fought a Congress that would seldom if ever work with him and dedicated their term in congress to removing him. Then there is the health care deal. I'm dying so it's kind of important to me so I read the 1,200 pages and realize that it is a game changer and will if allowed to fully implement may actually change people's lives when they get sick and more importantly before they need emergency service. Its a great document which takes all the power away from the big Pharma and Insurers when it comes to fruition. So reading what you think I surmise that the fear I expressed in my blog is manifest in you. I figure you won't vote or campaign for him so racism and fear has won out. Thanks Jack. I will continue to write because of you.
Skraeling July 16, 2012 at 01:24 am
Your list of the president's "achievements" is weak. He did nothing for the gay population but pay lip service and take their money. When the wind was right, he said he favored gay rights, but still "evolves" on DOMA....as for Libya, that is not going as well as we are told, and it posed no threat to American interests, just French and US oil interests..Osama bin Laden might be dead, but he became irrelevent on 9/12, and, I cannot in conscience, take joy in the death of another human being, since we will die sooner or later. Capturing him alive would have been better. Al quaeda, if we are being told the truth, is expanding in Syria, Saudi Arabia, Africa and Indonesia and grows..it is an idea and you cannot defeat an idea by force.. The health care bill, hopefully, is just a beginning to a national single payer system or extended medicare for all, but Sen. Baucus, with the Senate and White House refused to even consider single payer, and openly accepted millions from the drug companies and Health insurance industry and the bill those lobbies wrote is now law and devisive beyond belief. Don't play the racist card, it demeans you. There are legitimate reason why Obama, who once had my great support, my donations, and my labor in the last campaign, will not get it again. He, the Democrats, and GOP and Romney are not intersted in America..they want money...and power...nothing else matters. Sorry.
Marie Fairman July 16, 2012 at 01:57 am
I appreciate your opinion but will have to disagree. The one point I will address here is Bin Laden. That was the judgement of the Navy Seal with the full authority of the President no doubt to do what he did and kill him. I do not second guess those valiant men. I now believe it was the right and proper thing to do. By giving him a dignified yet ignominious death he then became irrelevant. 9/12 he became irrelevant? Are you kidding? We were frozen in place for weeks. A completely unnecessary war was waged with Iraq using him as the main reason. That and mushroom clouds. And please don't offend me and so many others who felt and still feel indescribable loss from 9/11 and tell me that I am spiking the football when I simply add Bin Laden's demise as an accomplishment of this President. And the ACA is a good thing and will be a better thing in the years to come. And who else do you make the deal with? You make the deal with the people who control the infrastructure. How do you think he got it passed? The Clinton approach? Single Payer is where this is all heading so the point is moot. I hope you will help Obama again but if you don't remember a lot of us do not consider his words "lip service" but courage. As a member of that community and married to a woman for nearly forty years I have hope if he remains President the DOMA will die. With Romney it will be prolonged needlessly. Once once again thanks for your comments.

I voted for Obama because i beleived he could change the mess we were in. I think Obama is stoppped from doing the great things he wants to get done because of racism. i think if there was a white democratic president, the other side would not be so hard to go against him. I think, and could be wrong, that Obama hits a wall for many things because plain and simple put, he is black. naturally no one will say that until now. so thanks
joninla July 18, 2012 at 06:20 pm
There is no need to wonder or question (which like most rational Democrats, you clearly don't want to make a judgment unless certain - the opposite of the official Republican Policy of 'never going against anything another Republican says/does - ever) since the leaders of the Republican Party declared their sole goal was to make Obama a single term President before he was able to act on anything and they have made our economic recovery stall so it will give them something to run on - the Economy, The Country, The People .... Our National Credit Rating ... all be damned if it can be used to get Obama out of office.
We do have to speak up when we see something so wrong going on and this is clearly a case of racism. (let me point out that racism does not mean a radical actually taking violent action to express their racism. It comes in all forms and even subtle unspoken feelings can be racism if it affects the way a person deals with those feelings. Watch the old movie again "Gentleman's Agreement" to understand people who say "I'm not racist" and in so many ways we see how many people do in fact act to discriminate (without realizing at times) based on those feelings).
Skraeling July 19, 2012 at 04:17 pm
if you see the President as a "black man" then you, too, are guilty of the "subtle racism" of which you warn others. He is of mixed race, so why is he "black"?
Chloe Ross July 19, 2012 at 04:41 pm
He is black because he identifies with being black. He has a blac kwife, two black daughters and he is well aware of how he is perceived by other people. And also for many centuries when a child of mixed race - esp in this country and esp black/white mix has been more than not welcomed by the black side of the family and scorned by the white ones. Not all. Not every - but it is a largely true point. Women gave up babies for adoption for many reasons - but being "part black" was in the top %. It is not subtle racism on Marie's part - it is a fact of American (and world) history. Ask some people of mixed racial background - don't rely on my experience and knowledge first hand - take your own survey. And I agree with Marie - He's black and it is a huge problem for many Americans.
joninla July 20, 2012 at 01:43 am
I would say almost everyone, myself included, has some degree of either racism or prejudice about a certain group of people.
Feelings are never right or wrong. What one does with their feelings is what either gives weight to those feelings or else to acknowledge and then use what ration and reason we have to act in the way that is right, despite any racial/prejudicial feelings one has. I encourage people to express these feelings (in a place they feel comfortable) and by just speaking out loud what is pure negativity will help each persons feelings based on fear or irrational feelings. Likewise, discussing openly those negative feelings can really help to in being able to act rationally in the future and not continue to seek anything anyone says as a reason (in this case) to 'Vote Obama Out'. So many people are voting against their own personal financial, medical and social interests by grasping on the latest absurd statement the Republicans will assert is the real reason Obama must go. Keep in mind we had 16 continues years of a Republican President that led to what the Republicans accuse Obama of - Reallocation of wealth. We just had it, going to the top 1% and Obama never made any such statement in context. A regular ploy - Blame the other guy of what you have already done yourself so nobody notices what you've done. Finally - changing from negative feelings to positive makes people happier and is no defeat.
Marie Fairman July 20, 2012 at 02:21 am
That was the point Jack we are all racists. It is to what degree does that racism turn you into an irrational and hateful person. We have a lot of that right now and it is to me so remarkable in its blatancy. I identify our President as black here in this case because he identifies himself that way and some won't vote for him because he is. Some people see me as a woman and some as a man. I identify myself as always being a woman even though I didn't even come close to looking like one until quite recently. We are entering a new time and new way of looking at each other. Perhaps this President is the nexus we need to go through. Regardless he has my support because as I have said now repeatedly I believe he is the best President in more than a half a century. Thanks again for taking such an interest in this one blog. I am flattered.

Obama is Black. Obama is not Black enough. Obama is too black. Obama has a Black wife and two Black children. . Obama’s mother was white. What about his middle name? Obama is an elitist person of color (That is just a crafty word for uppity.) Obama went to Harvard. Is someone jealous? Seriously, doesn’t someone with 9 houses seem elite? Even on an ordinary day I would not use the word elite to describe Obama but I would consider the McCain’s nouveau riche and they probably think they are elite. I know most middle of the road Americans are pondering how it came to pass that a dark looking man is running for president. Some are scared and will not say so. Others are forming militias. If Obama was white it wouldn’t matter. He might even slip by if his father had been white and his mother black but it is what it is. This is racist and every time someone mentions Black in a “roll your eyes” tone of voice or calls him the N word among “friends” – it’s a form of slur. Like it or not.
Chloe Ross July 21, 2012 at 02:11 pm
Marie: another Voolavex post I found today. Thought you would appreciate it. It was about the 2008 election but simply substitute McCain with Romney. And there are codes for black folks utilized by others to mention them surreptitiously. (As there are in all ethnic groups).

Dear tbs, Deon Coles black box is the worst tv show ever. Though it is hosted by a black man, it'sRead More a show based on pointing fun and rude Racist jokes directed toward black people. If there was a white host it would be considered racist but because a black man was appointed to be host , you might have figured we wouldn't be offended but we are and I can't speak for all but I feel like resist jokes aren't ok regardless of who is telling them and I would like tbs to take down this show or atleast change the points in the show ! -signed, Kalil Stimpson
