Single in Studio City: Late Night Haunts in the 'Hood

Los Angeles may not be the ‘city that never sleeps,’ but that doesn’t necessarily mean the sidewalks fold when the sun goes down. There are a myriad of places to congregate in the wee hours that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

Many single folks complain of difficulty sleeping, often feeling lonely, longing for a close companion to converse with. Rather than staying home and letting the four walls cave in, they covet communing with friendly souls, but haven’t a clue where to go after dark.

Unlike back East, renowned for night owls reigning free, a majority of local single men and women maintain that establishments to convene in the midnight hour are nonexistent. Instead of searching for a needle in a haystack, they give up, and resort to sitting in front of the boob tube.

Fret no more. There are numerous venues for dining, wining, dancing, schmoozing, listening to great music, keeping cool, and finding a stimulating rapport while the moon passes by overhead.

You don’t have to go far for class and sass; don your glass slippers; or wait for a pumpkin carriage (filled with your prince/princess charming) to sweep you off your feet. Even if you arrive solo, you’ll inevitably meet affable, welcoming, and pleasant cohorts with similar mindsets.

Seedy bars are not obligatory. There are ample fashionable, sophisticated, tasteful, and refined spots right in your own backyard.

Here are some of my favorites (in Studio City unless otherwise noted). Please feel free to add to the list by commenting at the end of this article and divulging any secret hideaways you’ve discovered in and around the ‘hood.

offers live music ranging from jazz to rock with no cover charge, from 10pm-1am on most evenings. The kitchen is open M-Th until 10p, Fri/Sat until 11p. If you’ve religiously read this column, you’ll have previously heard a multitude of kudos for this clandestine treasure.

not only serves the best baked potatoes this side of Idaho all night long, but they have awesome jazz Monday through Sunday with shows starting at 9:30p and 11:30p. Cover charge varies.

The new at Sportsmen’s Lodge has a happy hour Monday through Thursday from 10p-12M; and an extended bar menu from 10p-12M on Fridays and Saturdays with dancing to top DJ’s spinning until 2am.

is a hip, happening scene with dinner served until 11p Monday through Saturday and a special late night menu Monday through Thursday from 11-12M, Fridays and Saturdays from 11pm-1am.

, a lively, late hang, serves their full south of the border fare until 1am nightly. Jerry’s Deli is open until 1am weekdays/3am weekends, while Crave, Dupars, and Twains are 24 hour haunts.

Try for rockin’ gourmet sushi, open M-Th til 11p, Fri/Sat til 12M, and Sun til 10p. Opt for their Hollywood site with even later hours: M-Sat til 2am and Sun til 11p!

For great gourmet cuisine plus fantastic jazz and blues with no cover, consider Café Cordiale in Sherman Oaks on Ventura Blvd., just east of Hazeltine. Dine until 10:30p on Wednesdays, 11p on Thursdays, and 12M on Fridays and Saturdays.

Lucy’s 51 in Toluca Lake has a late night menu of calamari fritti, dips, hummus, chicken fingers burgers, and more, served until 1am. Starting at 9p, there’s a blues jam on Monday nights; guitar jam on Tuesdays; and jazz on Wednesdays. No cover. The chic crowd is a mix of professionals, locals, and celebrities.

If country or swing is your cup of tea, Joe’s American Bar and Grill in Burbank features dancing to live music, nightly at 9pm, plus guest DJ’s playing tunes until 1am or later. Dance lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8:30p ($5.00). Full menu served until 10p. No cover. Two drink or $6 bar minimum.

Take a hop, skip, and a jump on the 101 to Highland and head west on Sunset where you’ll find Bossa Nova serving Brazilian “comfort” classics til 4am Monday through Sunday; awesome Chinese fixings at trendy Toi, open until 4am; and a huge eclectic menu at Aroma Bakery & Café open daily until 1am(the Encino location has the same hours).

For an adventure and ambience comparable to a NYC stomping ground, exit the 101 at Vermont, and head towards Franklin where Fred 62 in Los Feliz, is hopping 24/7. Infamous for their mac & cheese, waffles, thai cobb, and cheese balls, it’s the perfect rendezvous to continue carousing after a night on the town.

Last but not least, you can always remain chill, calm, and collected watching fine flicks at the Arclight, Sherman Oaks or Hollywood, where films play nightly after 10p. On Thursdays, there are usually midnight shows of movies opening the following day.

If all else fails, you can pick up some groceries at the 24 hour Ralphs at Vineland and Ventura or Vons at Laurel Canyon and Ventura. You never know who you might pick up or who might pick you up in the process.

Next time the sandman passes over your abode, take a leap of faith and visit one of these prime selections. What have you got to lose?!

Oh, it was under announcements and not opinion so that is why I did not understand the post whichRead More appeared as facts.
John Walker May 21, 2013 at 05:14 pm
Presumptuous? What about my "endorsement" is presumptuous. You don't really need toRead More respond😃, I just didn't understand the comment.
Barbara Krause May 21, 2013 at 09:06 am
Somewhat presumptuous this early on Voting Day.

I attended N.H.H.S. in the mid-seventies. Mr. Reeves and Mr. Moelter were two of my favorites.Read More Loved Mr. McLeroy for Sociology.

great article Mary! Ms. Korney, she sometimes scared me to death! But always around christmas IRead More think of her and pronounce my letters clearly at the end of a word when I sing. I can still remember the song I had to sing for my final, "If ever I would leave you..." She taught me a lot. I agree with everything you said about Mr. Reeves. I had Mr. Pesin for Algebra, he did nothing to help further my math skills. The biggest flirt around, ick. We had a girl in school at the time that flirted her way to an A and hardly ever went to class. Go figure!! I also thought quite highly of Ms. Requiam. Glad she's still around.

glad you lost Wendy...not even your mafia DWP bedfellows could push you through..now go away...
Alex Daniels May 21, 2013 at 09:05 pm
I also notice Wendy Gruel has no platform, except taking money from special interest (most notablyRead More her puppet masters at the DWP) and having one of the most negative campaigns I've ever seen......no thanks, negative Wendy, fool me once.....Eric is our next Mayor....
Jo Perry May 20, 2013 at 08:27 pm
The signs are everywhere! Please vote for Wendy, Nora. He is also running ads about Wendy GreuelRead More that he knows are outright lies.

She has received a lot of flak about making a premature decision...I hope someone from OvarianRead More Cancer or the community weighs in on this and gives their thoughts in a blog! Thanks...just click the START BLOGGING button below! THANKS!

ok. have now spent some time navigating the new patch. i hope everyone will give it a chance. it'sRead More growing on me. i think once everyone is more familiar with the new version they'll like it too.
Irene DeBlasio May 17, 2013 at 04:09 pm
@MikeSzymanski I must admit that I haven't been able to detect a new format. Where is the format?Read More Who designed this? All I can tell is that there is a beautiful shot of trees -- perfect! Under that banner all hell breaks lose and you can't tell what you're looking it. There might be a huge blowup of Mr. Walker or a too big notice of something official-looking -- possibly an agenda. I have not been able to navigate through all the stuff. Lots of white space on either side which gives me impression that we're tailoring a community paper more toward an iphone or smart phone (or a tablet). Maybe I need a GPS to find a good list of contents here. In the meantime, it's not very attractive (exception for the banner trees photo) nor entertaining and not very informative. Scotty Reston, where are you now that we need you?

the picture selected is nice and it well suits the page. it would be nice to see the full pic. tooRead More bad so much of it is blocked from the top portion of the content....any chance of seeing the full picture and starting the content beneath it?
Barbara Krause May 17, 2013 at 08:00 am
I find this very disconcerting. Mel Randall who is on the Land Use Committee was asked to submit hisRead More name. We assumed qualifications would be checked and then those best suited would be chosen. Two entries of the same name is in itself so bad makes me feel that all of this should be redone.

I was at the meeting last night and saw all I need to see on how our neighborhood council work. TheyRead More had a drawing for the grievance panel. WHAT A SHAM!! They drew 1 guys name twice and rather than stop the proceedings and make sure that the names in the hat were legitimate and no other duplicates exist and redo the drawing, they just drew another name. Now it probably was just a fluke but the appearance of a rigged drawing is there and it taints the whole council and it proceedings. It is very apparent why we need a grievance panel in the first place. When the appearance of corruption exists at the lowest levels of our democratic process it is no wonder that the whole system is collapsing before our eyes. Our neighborhood council should hang their heads in shame!
