The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride Is the City’s Best Kept Halloween Secret

For a spooky, scary, one-of-its-kind Halloween night adventure, check out the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride.

Many residents aren’t aware of this local treasure, now celebrating its fourth year in operation at Griffith Park’s Old Zoo area, 4720 Crystal Springs Dr. However, for any and all thrill seekers looking for frightening fun and bloodcurdling excitement, it’s definitely worth a visit.

What’s unique about the LA Haunted Hayride is that it’s a mix of modern technology and old fashioned amusement. You’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time to a simpler era without all the Hollywood glitz to distract you from the true Halloween spirit.

The hayride is a blast with lots of spine-chilling characters jumping out of nowhere in the pitch dark, effectively shocking the daylights out of you. They come so close you can feel their breath, yet they never touch you.

These trained actors contort their bodies until they’re gracefully perched on the ledge of the wagon without losing their balance or concentration, while the vehicle continues to bounce along. They appear to be highly skilled dancers and gymnasts, quite limber and solid as a rock, straddling both sides of the moving cart.

Several guests were so frightened that they hid under their sweetheart’s arms, shaking in terror. There was also lots of laughter from the engaged folks, some having travelled long distances just to experience this unique journey.

Plan to have water sprayed and soap suds surround you, but do not fret. You won’t get wet, since you’re provided with rain repellant ponchos that keep you dry as a bone.

In addition to the novel hayride, there’s an exhilarating, enchanting maze (for an extra fee); an astonishing house of mirrors; a delightful skeleton merry go round that goes backwards; sideshow acts reminiscent of days of yore, featuring staggering swordsmanship and performers who walk on glass; psychic readings; photo ops; and plenty of creepy creatures to startle the socks off you.

Ticket sales support the LA Parks foundation, whose aim is to preserve parks for the people of Los Angeles. General Admission is $28, Double Attraction Passes are $37, and VIP passes that surpass the line are $52. $5-Off Discount coupons are available with a purchase of any Sunkistor Squirt soda product at Southern California Ralph’s Supermarkets. Vegan food by Mother Organica is available. Parking is free. Complete details at www.losangeleshauntedhayride.com.

@MikeSzymanski I must admit that I haven't been able to detect a new format. Where is the format?Read More Who designed this? All I can tell is that there is a beautiful shot of trees -- perfect! Under that banner all hell breaks lose and you can't tell what you're looking it. There might be a huge blowup of Mr. Walker or a too big notice of something official-looking -- possibly an agenda. I have not been able to navigate through all the stuff. Lots of white space on either side which gives me impression that we're tailoring a community paper more toward an iphone or smart phone (or a tablet). Maybe I need a GPS to find a good list of contents here. In the meantime, it's not very attractive (exception for the banner trees photo) nor entertaining and not very informative. Scotty Reston, where are you now that we need you?

the picture selected is nice and it well suits the page. it would be nice to see the full pic. tooRead More bad so much of it is blocked from the top portion of the content....any chance of seeing the full picture and starting the content beneath it?

I find this very disconcerting. Mel Randall who is on the Land Use Committee was asked to submit hisRead More name. We assumed qualifications would be checked and then those best suited would be chosen. Two entries of the same name is in itself so bad makes me feel that all of this should be redone.

I was at the meeting last night and saw all I need to see on how our neighborhood council work. TheyRead More had a drawing for the grievance panel. WHAT A SHAM!! They drew 1 guys name twice and rather than stop the proceedings and make sure that the names in the hat were legitimate and no other duplicates exist and redo the drawing, they just drew another name. Now it probably was just a fluke but the appearance of a rigged drawing is there and it taints the whole council and it proceedings. It is very apparent why we need a grievance panel in the first place. When the appearance of corruption exists at the lowest levels of our democratic process it is no wonder that the whole system is collapsing before our eyes. Our neighborhood council should hang their heads in shame!
