Understanding The Fall - Part 3
"My name is Sally
Can I take your order?
The falafel is good
4 bucks and a quarter."
I got this job
3 nights a week
The tips are okay
And the food is all Greek.
See, nothing at home
Seemed to go right
I cooked, I cleaned
I kissed her goodnight.
I made it through school
I got straight A's
I found this job
They gave me a raise.
But The Fall remained
It wouldn't budge
The Fall got meaner
And I pigged out on fudge.
"Sally," she said
"Have you thought about life?
College, career,
Or perhaps a housewife?
You could surely get in
To any good school
Your grades so improved
You broke not one rule."
But I chose to ignore
Miss Klott's gentle word
I just couldn't fly
Not this sick little bird.
Dust off my wings?
Gather my stuff?
Leave my mom?
Never -- Enough.
I worry for her
She can't make it alone
With Jane long gone
She needs me at home.
And yet I admit
Late at night
When the house is still
And the moon's just right...
I think of my life
And what could have been
If dad stuck around
And mom gave up gin.
Maybe I'd travel
Or study fine art
Or maybe bake pastries --
Sal's lemon tart!
Or meet a young prince
With dark wavy hair
Who'll whisk me away
On his beautiful mare.
We'll sail on his boat
We'll soak in the sun
He'll tell me great tales
Of wars he has won.
And romance...
Oh, Sally,
Quiet your thoughts
You're alone, you're different
For you there're no shots.
And I close my eyes
And taste the wet salt
And pretend it's a fabulous
Mint chocolate malt...
