A man in his 70s who was getting out of his vehicle was struck by a hit-and-run driver and seriously injured in Studio City Friday and a suspect was later taken into custody, authorities said.

It happened about 2:20 p.m. near Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Valleyheart Drive, just north of Ventura Boulevard, Los Angeles police Officer Brandon Jeon said.

The victim, whose condition was not immediately available, was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Jeon said.

One person was taken into custody, he said.

The man, who underwent surgery and was in critical condition but expected to survive, was hit as he was getting out of his vehicle, police told CBS2, which reported that the suspect was detained a short time and a few blocks from the crash scene.

This keeps happening in our city, the simple act of getting out of our cars. Perhaps lowering the speed limit is in order, or something???

While I agree drivers need to be more alert and drive more slowly, I also recommend people getting out of their cars remember to look for oncoming traffic before leaving their vehicle. I'm sure many of us have had to slam on our brakes or quickly change lanes to avoid a car door that has been suddenly opened into our path. I know I have, and am grateful I've never had the misfortune to hit someone.
