Bob Tomasino, Owner of Studio City's Oil Can Harry's, Reportedly Killed by DUI Driver

Details are scarce, but friends and patrons are talking of his passing on Facebook and Twitter.

Bob Tomasino, the longtime owner of Oil Can Harry's, a celebrated gay dance club in Studio City since the late 1960s, has reportedly died after being struck by a driver later charged with driving under the influence, according to the Studio City Community Activism Examiner.

No other details about the death have been released, though fans of the venue and friends of Tomasino have taken to social media outlets to express their condolences, including West Hollywood City Councilman John Duran.

"WEHOANS. Heard sad news. Bob Tomasino - owner of Oil Can Harry's - killed by a drunk driver," he said on Twitter. "This is heart breaking news."

Oil Can Harry's opened in 1968 and has since been a nightclub staple for LA's LGBT community.

In 2007, Tomasino was honored by LA Pride by being presented with the Sheldon Anderson Award. In a summary recognizing him, the publication wrote:

"His personal dedication can be seen through involvement with the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Golden State Gay Rodeo Association and Contestants, The Los Angeles Leather Coalition, Homestead Hospice House, and Tuesdays Child. ... Year after year his support for the largest gathering of the LGBT community in Southern California is gratefully appreciated with a beautifully decorated Country Dance Pavilion at the Los Angeles Pride festival."

Tommy Young, a performer at Oil Can Harry's, said on Facebook that the venue would be closed on Sunday.
