Los Angeles firefighters used a helicopter to locate three hikers who became lost in Griffith Park and hoist them to safety and itch relief, a Los Angeles Fire Department official said.

The 34-year-old man, 17-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl were with other family members on an outing at the merry-go-round at Griffith Park Sunday afternoon when they they went on a hike, according to LAFD spokeswoman Katherine Main.

A helicopter located the missing hikers on a foot trail around Vista del Val Drive at about  10 p.m., Main said.

They were hoisted one-at-a-time to a heli-spot, where efforts were made to decontaminate them so that poison oak with which they came into contact would not spread to the ambulance used to transport them for further treatment, Main said.
