UPDATE: Suspect Identified in Connection to LL Cool J House Break-In

The action star and rapper said he was protecting his family.

Action star and rapper LL Cool J stopped a 56-year-old transient in his Studio City hills home at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to Los Angeles Police.

The actor—whose real name is James Todd Smith—was in the movies SWAT and Rollerball and the TV show NCIS: Los Angeles, which is shot nearby at Studio City's lot. The actor plays a buffed Navy Seal in that series.

The gated house at 12000 block of Blairwood Drive is along a narrow road in the Studio City hills off Coldwater Canyon Boulevard where a number of recent house break-ins have occurred in recent weeks.

Detectives were still at the house at 12900 Blairwood Drive most of the afternoon on Wednesday, but the actor would not discuss the incident with the media.

The actor broke the man's nose and jaw when he confronted the intruder in his kitchen, said LAPD spokeswoman Tenesha Dobine of the Media Relations office.

LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado said police arrested Jonathan Kirby and booked him on suspicion of "hot prowl burglary." The actor was not injured in the altercation.

Kirby was booked Tuesday on the felony charge and his bail was set at $50,000. He remains in custody and did not post bail as of Thursday morning.

What did police think of the actor's handling of the situation? "In this particular case, the suspect did not have a weapon, (and) you have a victim who is in fear for their life, and a family member inside, in this case his daughter inside the residence ... (so) you're going to do whatever is necessary,'' Preciado said.

The actor's publicist Claudine Joseph released a statement:

"LL Cool J and his family are safe and thank everyone for their thoughts and concern. As a father, husband and citizen, he is committed to keeping his family safe and is cooperating with authorities on this private matter."

Neighbor Robbie Davis told KCAL-9 News that he contacted police at about 12:30 a.m. when he saw the suspicious man walking in the area.

"This was probably not the right place to break in," Davis said. The action star's house also has security gates and cameras.

The actor's daughter called 911 from the house soon after that her father had someone detained.

TMZ reported that the burglar alarm was tripped at the house.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Kirkby has a record of thefts, disorderly conduct and other criminal activity across Los Angeles and Orange counties. The paper reported that Kirby was sentenced to five years in prison for burglary in the 1990s and three years in prison for petty theft in 2005. He also has another theft conviction for which he served jail time and was discharged from prison on Feb. 1.
