Families and police officers and police officers with their families all gathered Tuesday night at North Hollywood Park to just have fun.
They ate free pizza, and sampled food given out by local restaurants, and drank free waters from Patch.
They watched local ballet dancers, singers of all kind, a big band and a boxing demonstration.
The 29th annual National Night Out is a casual time for the community to come together, but North Hollywood Police Capt. Peter Whittingham had a serious message.
"I want people to not only look around them and be diligent in looking for criminal activity, and they need to take it one step further, they need to do something about it, too," he said.
No, he told Patch, he's not advocating vigilante justice, and he's not encouraging that people shoot at criminals, but he said it is important to report criminals to the proper authorities and do something.
At one end of the two dozen booths were talking about their nature hikes and planting activities and at the other end were various Neighborhood Council representatives who were trying to recruit future members to the council for their upcoming elections.
"I don't know if we got anyone to agree to run for a position in our council, but we did educate a lot of people about what we do," saidwho is on the Studio City Neighborhood Council.
was on hand to meet and greet people in the communtiy as she prepares for the statewide competition and spend the next year doing community activities.
“I love coming out here to this community event,” said Paul Krekorian, who went to a few of them around his newly-drawn Council District 2. “It’s always good fun.”
It’s also a time for new introductions, such as Bill Hacket, the new field deputy for city council member Krekorian.
And, Craig Clough, who will still be working locally as an Assistant Regional Editor, introduced around his replacement as Local Editor to the North Hollywood-Toluca Lake Patch, Arin Mikailian, who will be starting in the next two weeks.
