offered the official Los Angeles Police Department policy about releasing the places where DUI checkpoints are occurring in advance.
Some readers were upset last week when from the LAPD.
Here is what Officer Lewis says:
Regarding the Department publicizing the locations and times of DUI checkpoints. I understand there are good arguments for both sides of the issue.
This is a statement from our City Attorney's office regarding both the Child Restraint and DUI checkpoints: "Advance publicity about the checkpoints is not necessary from a legal standpoint, but would be advisable with child restraint checkpoints. With respect to DUI checkpoints, publicity is not mandated. However, dispensing with the publicity requirement for DUI checkpoints is commensurate with the public outrage at drunken drivers. Seat belt and child restraint violations are important, but not as high on the scale as DUI detection. I would advise publicity about the checkpoints - not necessarily the location, but at least that they will occur."
The Department currently list the exact locations of upcoming sobriety checkpoints to assist television news entities with locating the checkpoints for coverage of the event.
It is the Department's view that the media attention and coverage passes a clear and strong message to the public that DUI checkpoints are occurring and are so on a frequent basis. LAPD believes this message is extremely important, not just to the community but also to those who may think about having one to many.
