3 More Dead Birds Found in Studio City With West Nile Virus

Officials warn to avoid touching dead birds and keep them away from pets.

Three more were found in Studio City this past week, and three were found in Sherman Oaks testing positive for the West Nile Virus, according to the Los Angeles County Vector Control District.

Earlier this week, Ray Bishop of Tarzana, contacted Patch and asked, "I saw a dead bird on my patio in Tarzana. First time I have seen such a thing in 30 years at this home. What should I do? Will someone want to come to test it?" The answer is "Yes." Use gloves or a plastic bag to wrap it up, and call (562) 944-9656.

The American Crow is the most commonly-found bird carrying the virus, as well as the Western Scrub Jay, the House Finch and the American Robin. This year, 18 species of birds were found with the virus (listed here).

Two dead birds testing positive were found in Chatsworth, one in Northridge, Canoga Park, Sun Valley, West Hills and Van Nuys.

This is the first time this year that incidents of West Nile was found in Sun Valley, Canyon Country and Canoga Park.

In 2010, more dead birds with the virus tested positive in Northridge, and in 2009, the hot spots were Van Nuys and Valley Village.

No birds with West Nile Virus were found in Studio City in the past two years.

Crystal Brown, the public information officer of the vector control district said, "The mosquito season is not over. Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer vaction, but the West Nile virus will continue to be a threat as long as the temperatures remain high."

This past week, the Vector Control District found 23 more West Nile virus positive dead birds, 29 positive mosquito samples and six sentinel chickens showing virus antibodies. The chickens were mostly found in the Sepulveda Basin, 91436 ZIP code area.

Another way that the Vector Control district monitors the incidents of West Nile Virus is through mosquito traps that are put out in the areea.

Of the 29 mosquito samples testing positive for the West Nile Virus in the Los Angeles area, 10 were found in the San Fernando Valley this past week. Two were in Burbank and Encino, one in Studio City.

Residents can be proactive and follow the 3 D's of West Nile virus prevention to help stop the transmission of West Nile virus:

1. Dump/Drain - Eliminate standing water because that's where mosquitoes breed.

2. Dusk/Dawn - Avoid outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active.

3. Defend - Wear insect repellent containing EPA-registered ingredients such as DEET, Picaridin or Lemon Eucalyptus Oil and long-sleeve shirts and pants when outdoors. Use properly-fitted screens free from tears on windows and doors around your home to keep mosquitoes out.

For more information about West Nile virus and our vector control services, call (562) 944-9656 or visit www.glacvcd.org.

For statewide information and statistics about West Nile virus, or to report a dead bird or squirrel, visit www.westnile.ca.gov or call 1-877-WNV BIRD.

ok. have now spent some time navigating the new patch. i hope everyone will give it a chance. it'sRead More growing on me. i think once everyone is more familiar with the new version they'll like it too.

@MikeSzymanski I must admit that I haven't been able to detect a new format. Where is the format?Read More Who designed this? All I can tell is that there is a beautiful shot of trees -- perfect! Under that banner all hell breaks lose and you can't tell what you're looking it. There might be a huge blowup of Mr. Walker or a too big notice of something official-looking -- possibly an agenda. I have not been able to navigate through all the stuff. Lots of white space on either side which gives me impression that we're tailoring a community paper more toward an iphone or smart phone (or a tablet). Maybe I need a GPS to find a good list of contents here. In the meantime, it's not very attractive (exception for the banner trees photo) nor entertaining and not very informative. Scotty Reston, where are you now that we need you?

the picture selected is nice and it well suits the page. it would be nice to see the full pic. tooRead More bad so much of it is blocked from the top portion of the content....any chance of seeing the full picture and starting the content beneath it?

I find this very disconcerting. Mel Randall who is on the Land Use Committee was asked to submit hisRead More name. We assumed qualifications would be checked and then those best suited would be chosen. Two entries of the same name is in itself so bad makes me feel that all of this should be redone.

I was at the meeting last night and saw all I need to see on how our neighborhood council work. TheyRead More had a drawing for the grievance panel. WHAT A SHAM!! They drew 1 guys name twice and rather than stop the proceedings and make sure that the names in the hat were legitimate and no other duplicates exist and redo the drawing, they just drew another name. Now it probably was just a fluke but the appearance of a rigged drawing is there and it taints the whole council and it proceedings. It is very apparent why we need a grievance panel in the first place. When the appearance of corruption exists at the lowest levels of our democratic process it is no wonder that the whole system is collapsing before our eyes. Our neighborhood council should hang their heads in shame!
