L.A. Officials to Flip the Switch on First Feed-in Tariff Solar Project

The City of Los Angeles will launch the nation’s largest rooftop solar program Wednesday morning in North Hollywood. Mayor Villaraigosa, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) General Manager Ron Nichols and others will stand atop an apartment building where solar panels will be connected to the grid with the flip of a switch.

LADWP's Feed-in Tariff (FiT) Solar Program enables building owners or other third parties to create solar farms on their rooftops and sell solar power to LADWP for distribution on the city’s power grid. This benefits all Angelenos by creating a business incentive for the production of clean solar energy while boosting local jobs and spurring the solar industry in the City of Los Angeles.

This program has been championed by LADWP, the LA Business Council and the CLEAN LA solar coalition, whose members include business, environmental, civic, community, academic & environmental justice groups.

Mayor Villaraigosa will announce completion of the first solar project under LADWP’s FiT Program – the largest FiT rooftop solar program in any U.S. city. After the formal announcement, the Mayor will "flip the switch" that will launch the program – feeding power from the rooftop into the grid, and kicking off a program that will provide jobs, economic benefits and clean, no-carbon power for the City of Los Angeles.

The event will take place at 9 a.m. at the Oxnard Plaza Apartments, 11313 Oxnard Street in North Hollywood.
